    Thermometer and Temp Gun
I'm really struggling to set up my tank. Right now my tank is the ideal temp on both sides according to my thermometer on the hot and cool side but the temp gun says something different. When I point it at the tank it says about 80 and if I put it in the tank it reads 104. Am I using the temp gun right? Should i point it outside of the tank through the glass or put it in the tank and point? Should I trust the thermometer or the temp gun? Also I have a probe for the Under the tank heater but I'm not sure where to put it. I heard mix reviews on where to put the probe. I heard in the tank under the substrate so it sits right above the tank but I also heard outside the tank under the heater. Please help

The temp gun is a surface temp reader you point it directly at the glass inside your tank (under the substrate) where the uth is at. That temp should read no more than 92*F. That being said put that probe in between the uth and the glass under the tank. So the tstat should be set around 94* roughly for the top of the glass to read max 92*.

Curiosity...do you have a thermostat or dimmer or anything regulating how hot the uth gets? Cause 104* is min 12* to hot

My guess is it took the tempiture of the side of the enclosure and them the floor where UTH is..
If you got a good temp gun it should have a Laser.. What you point the laser at is what your taking the temp of. Stay close as possible so other things dont effect the reading.
If im checking my Substrate where the UTH is i practically touch it.. You can not check ambient temps with it.

Temp guns don't work trough glass and have a general problem with reflective surfaces. They use infrared LIGHT to measure the temperature, this light needs to bounce back and not be reflected around.

    ^This ^

You simply open the glass doors or lid to check on the temps all around the viv / rub .

I'd be lost without my temp guns .

I've had this same problem. My accurite gauge will measure the air temp at 88 degrees but my temp gun will register 94-95 in that same area on the surface. Which one do we want to go with. The surface temp or the air temp??

I've always gone with the surface temps as that's what your snake is lying on / in . The general air temps / ambient temps are useful but not as crucial , I'd say .
