Need some advice on a situation
I am going to be getting engaged to the man I have spent the last 14 years of my life with. I was married before and I need a copy of my divorce papers for when I get married next year. I called the courthouse of the county I live in and there is no record of the divorce papers. This divorce was back in January of 1998. It was handled by an attorney and it was not contested by either myself or my ex husband. I can't remember the attorney's name or location. My ex probably has a copy of the divorce papers but he is not giving them to me. He got remarried in 1998 after the divorce. I wrote him a letter today asking nicely I don't think this is going to work. My mother also contacted him on my behalf and he will not return her phone call. Do I need to get my own attorney at this point? I live in the same state as my ex but in a different county. Thanks for any and all advice.

Many counties scan documents and store them on microfiche or other digital media after a few years. Keeping tons of paper around is expensive.
Does your county have a web site where you can search on your name and get a list of associated civil cases even if the documents aren't available? If so that will get you a case number and you can use that in your records search.
