Can't get temps up high enough - should I shift the CHE?

Hi - my BP arrives on Tuesday so for the past day and a bit I've been ironing out how to get my temps and humidity right. No problem on the humidity front, however I can't get the temp of the cool end above about 73. The hotspot temp sits perfect at 90, but with the thermostat as high as it'll go (94) it still can't get that end above 73.

It's a 3 foot long wooden viv, and the CHE is right at one end of it - I put it up where the people before me had theirs. My only thought to fix it is to move the CHE further along the length of the tank? I've since read I should aim for a 1/3 the way down?

I was playing around with probe placement, obviously doesn't have to stay there. Cool end has gone up to 75/76, which is better but clearly still not okay.

Your UTH is only for a hot spot NOT ambient so I hope you are taking that temperature under the aspen an your thermostat probe is between the mat an bottom.

You may nee more than one overhead heat source with an enclosure that large.

Are you getting an adult? That is way too big for a hatchling.

Appreciate the suggestion for a second CHE. I don't have a UTH, only the CHE - with a wooden viv it was my understanding no heat would come through from below so I'd have to go with putting the mat inside, or inside under a false bottom. I wasn't too happy with that considering he's a big snake, and with no RHP sellers in the UK I went with a CHE.

And yup, he's an adult - 900g, and I believe he was in a 3 foot tank before.

You are correct. When I built wooden enclosures I used glass on the bottom.
You are going to have to add a second.
I cannot believe you cant get a RHP over there...

Update - I changed to a higher wattage bulb (150w) and attached some of the insulatey wadding I use for quilt making to the outside of the tank on the side that faces the window. That's all it took and we're all measuring great!

I did that the other day and he arrived this morning, explored happily and then snuggled into one of his hides when he found it. Feels amazing to have him!

I have an RHP in one of my enclosures and it is from an UK manufacturer (Habistat / Euro Rep), search online and I'm sure you'll find someone who sells RHP's in the UK, if for some reason you can't find anyone, try Amazon.co.uk ;)
