If you do plan on picking up something recessive I'd suggesting starting with a female. It'll make any projects you want to work on progress faster.

Right now my only adult is my female pastel...I bought 2 boys this year, both are slamming rat pups and need to move up a size...lol...the boys mature a bit faster, don't they? I'd like to breed in the future but so far have pretty much bought scale babies I like the look of...no real plan yet...

Yep, the boys mature about 1-2 years faster then girls. The reason projects move faster with females, at least from my understanding, is that you can breed your male to her, hold back a male het from the pairing and then breed it back to the original female. Which would only take about a year because you're raising a male.

I suppose that since you already have a breeding female you wouldn't be saving much time (you'd still be raising a male and a female) but in the long run I'd rather have a visual female because it will give off hets 100% of the time. I want to avoid possible hets as much as possible.

The same is true with freeway/highway, I would never buy either of those morphs because it would be impossible to tell the yellowbellies from the asphalts/gravels. I'd want to buy a super asphalt/gravel so I can know for sure what the babies are.

That makes so much sense. I couldn't afford an expensive morph when I bought my first girl...I went with a pastel because the original breeder I contacted stated pastel went pretty well with everything...

Well, I started with two normals because I was young at the time (like 12 XD) and couldn't even afford pastels

The reason I picked up Monty is because all of his genes work well with pretty much everything. Assuming he is what he was sold as (I have no real reason to doubt his genetics) he'll make some amazing babies. I just hope I can pick up fairly quickly how to distinguish what from what...

EDIT: Also I'd like to mention I currently have no recessive genetics anyway. I plan on picking up a female clown or desert ghost combo at the next CRBE if I can find the "right" one for a price I'm willing to pay.

Yeah, when I picked out my boys I went for combos and then with each girl I picked up after I went for morphs or combos I didn't have...so I have 7 snakes and 10 different genetic morphs...ie...pastel, lesser, butter, fire, Leopard, pinstripe, spider, Mojave, yellow belly and black pastel.
