"Rescue" Corn...lol...

Someone in town wanted to find a new home for their corn snake and posted an ad in our local rummage sale group. A co-worker tagged me knowing I have snakes (all ball pythons). Past owner has had snake since before her daughter was born, she looked to be maybe 5ish. Snake came with tank, decorations and one frozen mouse...lol...they were using an overhead heat lamp for him/her. He/she looks healthy and well taken care of. Ambient temps in my snake room are in the high 70's (warmest room in the house), do I need UTH as well? I'd need better pictures of the snake (from the top, and a belly picture too) to tell morph. I'm leaning towards either bloodred, motley, or stripe.

Corn snakes need a hot spot of 85 degrees. The ambient temperature doesn't seem to much matter for them as long as your house doesn't dip into the low 60s. They also do best with belly heat so you're going to want to find a way to elevate one side of the tank to allow airflow for a UTH with a thermostat. Corn snakes also love to burrow, so switching him to aspen would make him a lot happier.

I know they aren't the best pics...they brought him over in his tank and I haven't handled him yet, wanted him to settle a bit after moving in his tank...lol...prior owner didn't know sex, she said about 4 feet in length...I have a vivarium thermostat for my rack system but it is probably set too high for the corn...will have to go through my box of old equipment and see what I have stashed...

They do like to hide and bury themselves. That said, mine is also fairly active, and climbs around. I have an RHP over his largest magnetic ledge - he likes to hang out on that as well. Nice, since that way he is out, and I can admire him. He also has a UTH on a VE t-stat, and another cool hide.

If I were going to do a bare bones tank set up, I'd use SaniChips, some branches for climbing, and two hides, one over a regulated UTH. Clips would be easier than those rocks for the top screen.

LOL, those are water bowls/pools from my old set ups...they were the heaviest things I had handy...I don't have any clips as my old set ups were Reptariums and they had zipper closures. Right now I put a light back on him, I found a cheap thermostat in my box of stuff but my heat mats are 3 pronged and the thermostat is 2 pronged...grrr! I ordered some aspen bedding, will switch over to that when I get it...he was due for feeding and the BP'S were as well...he ate just fine...

Feeding update...had an extra rat pup as one of my girls wouldn't eat last night...popped it in his tank and it was gone this morning...I'm sure it was his first rat!
