    Breeding/Genetics Question
    Hi,

    I'm fairly new to ball pythons. And just curious as to how the pied came about, the clown, banana, spider morphs came about. Anyone know the history/ how to make one I guess starting from regular ball pythons?

    Just curious on the basics of breeding for what you want are.

    They were found in the wild, imported in the US and proven to be genetic.

    Pied was proven by Pete Khal in the 90's

    Spider by Kevin McCurley in the 90's

    Clown I think VPI not sure.

    Banana by Will Slough in early 2000 something.

    What you are asking implies that these genes are all polygenic and originally came from normal individuals which they did not. They are the result of not so natural selection lol Essentially they are all (well mostly) genetic mutations that popped up randomly in the wild and were captured for the pet trade because they looked different from the normal wild type individuals. In theory it is possible for a new mutation that provides an incredible phenotype to randomly pop up in your collection but it is highly unlikely. It has happened by chance that people have bred two individuals that were both randomly het for a ridiculous previously undiscovered trait thus essentially creating a new trait (look up the king of dinkers) but that is unlikely.

    There are ways of inducing mutation in animals but to do so simply in effort to produce a cool new morph for the pet industry would be highly unethical and would be a huge waste of resources and time... It would also be impossible unless you had a doctorate in genetic engineering or the like and access to a state of the art lab.
