Thamnophis Concinnus Slugfest...

Slugfest...

That really sums it up in my attempt to produce some hatchlings from my 2year old Oregon red spotted garter snake pair. They were brumated late in 2015 for 3 months at 55F. Brought them out in January 2016, beginning with a gradual increase in temps over a weeks time. Both virgin garter snakes and paired them, seeing numerous breedings and locks. Temps up to 78F ambient with a warm spot of 86F controlled in a rack and by thermostat. Locking together to the point where the female was dragging the male across the tub floor. She really didn't ever show signs of being gravid until late in July when she began to refuse food and start to appear thickened and rounded. Over the last 48 hours she has been laying slugs and has put a dent in my hopes for her this season. I am just hoping she passes all of the slugs and by some chance gives birth to at least a couple of babies.

Yeah, it really does stink since I was counting on her to produce. The yellow orangey tissue clumps are the slugs (unfertilized ova). Sorry for the poor quality pics but I took them with the iPad. The danger to the female is if she doesn't pass them all or have hatchlings that don't present or are retained. This was a favored project that I was very hopeful about. :( :(

Hopefully your breeding is more sucessful next season, i would like to see a progression thread on this. How are your thamnophis temperments are they flighty, agressive, relaxed, do they musk you? I have been wanting to get a California red sided garter but i live in California so ill have to look at something else.

Gracias' pl! She is a pretty strong girl and i think she will pull through. I have notified the vet though in case she goes past 72 hrs.

Thank you B! I'll consider that. The various garters i keep are pretty well behaved. The male red concinnus gets flighty when initially picked up and will musk if he feels threatened and the same for the Cali red sided males. The females are much more handleable and subdued. The albino checkereds are cool both male and female. The eastern blacknecks , well it depends but they do mellow out after being picked up.
