    cranky python
    hi:
I'm new to the site- this looks awesome. The reason I searched out a ball python site is my snake is cranky and I'm not sure what is going on. I'm worried.
She is 3 years old. She is a typical laid back easy going ball python. Her sheds have been fine - she eats well. About 2 large mice every few weeks. She is in a 75gln tall reptile tank with the approrpiate light, underside heating 1 side - places to curl up - a good piece of driftwood to curl around - fresh water.
I have never had a problem picking her up and taking her out or putting her back in her tank. She likes to explore and when I have time I block part of my bedroom off for her to slither around.
Its probably been a few weeks - about a week ago I went to pick her up. She hissed at me. I looked closer and she was slightly dull so I figured she was getting ready to shed. I left her alone. Kept her tank clean - etc.. she shed saturday. The shed was fine - all one piece.
I tried to pick her up again last night and she hissed at me again. I don't want to push the issue so i just backed off.
She ate tonight -fine no problem.
Now it is hot here - could that be it? Is there something I should do for her. I'm scared she is sick and I don't know a good reptile vet in our area. But if she is just in heat or something I don't want to traumatize her worse by having to move her around. This is my 2nd ball python and I never had a problem with my other one.
can someone give me some advice?
    thank you! sarah

Well Sarah, I don't think there's really anything to worry about. My Ball sometimes hisses at me when she doesn't feel like being picked up. Like other animals and people. We have moods, so do they. She's cranky, so wants to be left alone for a bit, or it could be that you gave her a startle, so she might feel that she needs to defend herself. My Kiana tends to hiss when someone new tries to take her out of her cage. Overall I wouldn't worry about it. Everything else seems fine.
