    Line breeding
I'm just starting to look into ball python breeding as a small time hobby. I bred dogs for a long time so I have some knowledge of line breeding but wasn't sure if it worked the same in snakes. I'm speaking with someone about a pair of snakes that have the same father different mothers. Would it be ok to breed this 2 together. Will it cause genetic defects or since the mothers are different would it be ok?

Not a problem. Breeding of closely related snakes is common in the hobby without issues.

From what I understand, line breeding in ball pythons is totally fine for a few generations, and I have no idea how many generations it would take before it's "not fine". Snakes are pretty primitive animals, and there aren't so many nuances in temperament and health like for dogs.

Yea with dogs your ok for a bit but if you get too closely related or your blood gets too tight you will definitely see some defects come to the surface. All the good traits are better but all the bad traits get amplified as well. Seems more noticeable in dogs than with snakes. I figured most ppl had some from of line breeding but wasn't sure if siblings would be different than father/daughter type breedings. Plus with the large number of snakes out there I also figured it's easier to get around line breeding too much. Lots of places to get unrelated pairs

It's safe to line reed for the F3 generations safely. The reasonable probability of birth defects or disability may vary however. Outcrossing is best accomplished at this time or shortly afterwards.
