Approach to breeding

I'm sure this is a matter of opinion but for someone wanting to do some small time breeding for fun as a hobby what approach would work best? Buying a couple powerhouse males with lots of genes to raise and then when they are ready buying a few cheaper adult females to breed to. Or invest in females early to grow out a few nice females and picking up males a few seasons later?

Always start with females, they cost more and take longer to grow.

Get high quality females now by the time they are close to size/age you can get a powerhouse male. By waiting on the male you will probably also see a price drop for better and better males as market supply and prices change.

I bred dogs for a long time and it was a similar idea. Getting a few real nice females to start and slowly add a few males to the mix. And a major plus is the price drop on the males by the time you actually need them will be nice.

I'm so intrigued with most of these morphs. There's so many options and possibilities that it seems like a very fun hobby. I know it can get expensive so I'm trying to take it slow. I agree with Pit and Piedlover. If you 're gonna get into it. Focus on putting quality animals into your collection. Start with girls, grow them nice and easy. No power feeding. When they hit about a year old, grab a really nice male or 2. Take that year to gain more info, and research what males you'll be looking to get. And always enjoy the animals.

Another approach is to buy fully mature adults about 4 years old and breed this year and see if you like it before you get in too deep.
