    Hatchling live to f/t
I just got a new bp have him set up in his home, the only thing is the breeder said he was one to two feedings away from going from live to f/t. My problem is I live in a small town and our only reptile store only carries f/t and the closest place to get live is 1.5 hours away but I don't have that kind of time to drive 3 hours with my work schedule. Do you have any suggestions on getting him to eat f/t?

Avoid that seller in the future. IMO he told you what he needed in order to make the sale. BP's are the most finicky eaters and while some may take f/t as a first meal, some may make the switch eventually and some may never make the switch. Just as some will only eat mice and not eat rats. He cannot guarantee that it will.

Make sure you thaw out completely, heat up to a nice temperature and when you're trying to feed your BP, use tongs and you can try either holding the rat by the tail or using tongs to grip behind the skull and sometimes this seems more like real movement to them.

Did you know the animal was feeding live and was not converted to f/t before acquiring it?

I'm only consider a F/T feeder an animal that ate 3 to 5 F/T consecutively and successfully (the more the better really), if not that the animal is a live feeder.

The bottom line is that even if your snake eats f/t you should always be prepared to feed live and if the food supply is not available around you this is an issue.

Buying a snake is different than buying a dog you should always make sure that there is a food supply nearby or be ready to breed and make sure to have a qualified herp vet nearby or be willing to drive long ways.

Just called my local reptile store and turns out if I can get live shipped in if I call them before Friday, the breeder said he last ate on this past Friday so I'll try a f/t and if that doesn't work I'll get a live on Tuesday.

Yea I don't think this guy has even made sure they know what they are doing before seeking them snakes, when I said I had a temperature control for my uth and I made a humid hide to keep the humidity up, he said your the only one that's brought that stuff up. Yea and I also emailed him if I could buy a few fuzzys off him in the coming weeks so I could try to convert my snake to f/t he said no (he breeds his own rats) and he said lol idk when I asked if anywhere around us sold them. Defiantly not a repeat customer :P

Just food for thought. Before I give somebody my money for an animal, I try to talk to them a few times in the phone. This gives me a chance to get to know them a bit and get a feel for them. If they breeder takes time to answer your questions and makes a little time for you instead of being short and rude then that's a plus in my book. Sean and Tim are both friends of mine, and I've seen them take time to speak with anybody who had questions. If I'm trying to show interest in purchasing something and the breeder can't give me a few minutes of my time, then he clearly doesn't want my business. That also shows poor customer service.

This was the second guy I went to, the first guy I went to kept his in the back of a bird supply store where he worked, where it was loud, all his bps where living in wet damp peat moss and the few I handled had signs of RIs. This guy had over 30 snakes in a rack system and they all seemed quite healthy to me, no ri, scale rot and he had recorded dates of each of them eating. I don't think it was quite that he was incompetent I think he just wasn't that friendly of a person and it came off kinda rude. I live in a small town there wasn't many options and there appears to be nothing wrong with how he was taking care of his animals.

I've never tried to switch a ball python before but I've switched wild snakes onto frozen thawed tons of times with a lot of success. Its all in the mouse dance lol. Also wanted to add buying 2 mice, feeding one, and keeping a second in a critter keeper for a week isn't that much work. Which would still mean a drive every two weeks but not as inconvenient.
