why quarrantine?

Why quarrantine?

Is mites the only communical issue that can come between snakes? I hear of people doing 6 months... i guess i dont comprehend. When mites life cycle is relativly short.

What else is there to avoid?

Ive had up to 7 snakes at one time. Never any issue

Can someone educate me?

Many people own snakes on a large scale. If one snake comes in with mites, any type of RI, or even IBD and you go ahead and put it with the rest of your snakes, now you're putting them at risk.
And think about it, catching the problem and treating it while the animal is being quarantined is much cheaper than being careless and having to treat your whole collection. And I think its not how short the mites life span is, but how fast they spread and once theres a lot of them it can take months to completely get rid of them.

If you care about the well-being of your other snakes, and the one you've just purchased, you'll be smart and quarantine it:gj:

Because its the smart thing to do.
Is it worth taking a chanse on the lives of your whole collection?
There are more than just mites out there not to mention just the stress of having mites can cause other problems.

Reapiratory infection and ibd are contagious?

I thought RI is only from bad husbandry? Im not familiar with ibd... irritable bowel disease? Thats what the human acronym is i believe

Search 'IBD in snakes'. It's a pretty fatal disease.

Respiratory infections are very contagious within snakes.

Why?

To protect your established animals. Personally I have invested too much financially and time wise to take any risk. I have very strick quarentine and it has served me well over the last decade.

Over the years I have seen people losing part or their entire collection to things such as IBD, OPMV.

I have seen people with mite outbreaks.

So tell me why wouldn't you quarantine?

Yikes. I remember when this happened. This remains my nightmare, and why I QT every animal that comes in to my collection.

As a vet tech, I'm floored that this even had to be asked. I had a whole spiel going in my head, but that fauna thread pretty much covers it.

As a vet tech im sure you know more about it than me. I was asking to be educated. Not ridiculed.


That thread was nothing like i expected. Very sad. I have a separate room i can use for quarrantine. Currently i only have one snake. Ill be adding a few more soon. Do vendors at reptile shows like NARBC not fear this? i handled a lot of snakes from many breeders last weekend, a few requested i put some hand sanitizer on. So do these breeders put all of their leftover show inventory into quarrantine after the show?

I had no idea they could pass airborne diseases, is there anything that they can have that could make a human sick?

If i quatrantine into another room of the house or should i just keep them in the same room? Ive got central air...
