If you can't tell the difference between this and a normal I'm afraid you'll need more experience with many of the morphs that are out there. There are a lot of morphs that can be described as "looking normal" which, in my opinion, just means that one isn't looking hard enough.

A black head has, as you can see in the pictures, a black head as opposed to the brownish sometimes blushed head of a normal. Another key indicator is the pattern and characteristic black back. The classic alien heads become single eye heads or erratic all together, not to mention the increased melanistic look to the snake all together. It also tends to have intense flames coming up the sides as well.

I think when getting to know morphs, you should always do your research (as you are doing now) and learn as much as you can about the morph. Learn if it's dominant codom or recessive. Learn all the popular combos. And most importantly learn how to identify the morph. Double check if the snake is what it's labeled as. Buyers reputation and what the snake is labeled as should be the final thing to keep in mind after exhausting your research. In your buddies case it's tough because yb is a hard to identify morph but after seeing a bunch it should be easy

black head is one of the coolest morphs out there in my opinion. I plan on doing a lot of work with them in the next few years.
here is a picture of a super black head so you can better understand.
