help me ID a turtle!

    help me ID a turtle!
    Yesterday we saw a turtle on the side of the road (alive.) It looked like a box turtle but had a shell like a snapper; keeled in the back with pretty sharp scales. it was a male; had a concave belly. Any idea what it could be? I am in western NY.

    From your breif description sounds like a sounds like maybe a Wood Turtle (Clemmys insculpta) ?

    Thanks everyone. We have ID-ed him as a wood turtle. :)
    Nice to see something around here, other than the ubiquitous snappers.

    Glad to hear it was a wood. Snappers do seem to be a "hot item" in some places.

    yeah wood turtle never heard of them lol might have to look it up
