Polyurethane

I bought the materials tonight to cover the back of the cage. The wood I believe is called "Lauan?"(maybe) and is approximately 1/4" thick. It is strong but lightweight. The description says it is water-resistant, but I figured that it wouldn't be resistant enough to rattie piddle. I found some polyurethane waterproofing and was wondering if anyone knew its toxicity on rodents. If it is toxic at all... I know alot of people use it to coat the insides of wooden snake cages. I know it is toxic in its liquid form, but what about after it has been applied to wood and has been allowed to off-gas for 48 hours or so? I doubt they will be chewing on it, since they aren't big chewers(except Harry...Dufus), and I doubt they could get a grip on it with their teeth since it will be the flat back.

If I can't use this stuff, then I will just go buy some more of the melamine-coated stuff. If anyone has any experience with this stuff, I would love some feedback. Thanks a bunch :)

I wouldn't risk it for rodents .... poly (even when try) can be toxic when ingested. For snake cages I think it's fine once it's fully cured, but rodents have a way of chewing and scratching things when you least expect it.

I would have to go with adam. The ratties definately might get their teeth on it. I would look for a non-toxic paint or something like that to put on the back.

EDIT: just a thought, maybe contact paper?....that would kinda waterproof and should not be harmful.

Ah, ok. At least I didn't buy that, but I do have to take the Thompson's waterseal back tomorrow, so I will look when I get there for some non-toxic waterproof paint.

Is aquarium sealant non-toxic? I plan to use that to seal the joints on the inside of the cage. If it isn't toxic for fish(meaning chemicals leaching in the water), I don't think it would be a problem. But what do I know.. :)

Edit: Ooh! Yeah, ConTac paper might be waterproof, and plus, it would come in perdy colors :) I'll look for that too when I go. I love Home Depot, they have everything...

ha...I have always wondered that too....that stuff sure does smell toxic :)
