    Meet my danger noodle!
    Hey guys!

This is is my first ever thread on ball-pythons.net, but not first ever time on the site. I refer to this website for almost everything ball python related. I'm a girl who went from ophidiophobia to of-course-I-love-snakes-yah! Cheesy? I apologize.

But it a little about me, I used to be terrified of snakes! Snakes on a Plane really did it for me. Keep in mind, I always found snakes fascinating. I think they're incredible and very unique animals (I also hate heights yet love roller coasters).

ANYWAY! I digress. Off to the most exciting part of this post! I GOT MY FIRST EVER SNAKE. Who would've thought?! His name is Jumbi (like jumbo, but cuter) and he is a banana! The breeder told me he may have fire in him, but it's very subtle. I'll post some pics so you guys can decide! Either way, he was sold to me for a very good deal and he is STUNNING.

It's only my third day with him, but the first day was quite rough on the little guy. He arrived at my door around 9:20am from Chicago from 46and2reptiles on YouTube. Check him out! He produces amazing quality balls and he truly cares for his animals.

I started him out in a tub thinking I would have an easier time keeping up with it and it would simulate how he was being kept on a rack system. It started out okay, until I noticed the humidity was a little high at 80%. Now, as a first time snek mama, I was concerned(at everything). I ordered a heat pad off of Amazon a week before he arrived but something happened with the shipping and it was to be delivered the same day he got to my house. This was so stressful because UPS can be iffy with their shopping times. Some come earlier than others. Of course this package came later (like 4 hours later) after Jumbi arrived. So my poor danger noodle was just wandering around aimlessly in the tub looking for a heat source. So I thought I would hold him for the time being and keep him warm with my body hear. Not the best idea. I knew he was stressed from the travel, but I cared more for his warmth. Duh. Of course he struck in the air. It kind of startled me a little bit! But it was really cute 😭

After a couple hours of having him I decided to move him to a terrarium because he is going to be a pet and being me, I like aesthetically pleasing displays for my animal. It's like having a piece of Africa in my bedroom. So I made a quick trip to PetSmart, bought a 20gallon All Living Things Terrarium, a climbing log/hide, a plant, and a 50 watt infrared bulb. Then made a quick trip to Lowe's and got a cheap dome lamp. Immediately rushed home to set up the terrarium. Surprise sirprise, still no sign from UPS.

The terrarium was set up: repti bark as substrate, an accu-rite thermo/hygro, 2 hides, water bowl, plant, and FINALLY the heat pad arrived(also came with a Jump Start thermostat & infrared temp gun). I didn't want to install it with him inside the enclosure, I've pissed him off enough already 😅 I had a hard time configuring the temperature of the heat pad at first but now his warm side stays between 88-92, cool side around 78-83 and I used the heat lamp to warm the ambient temperature for a bit and it's around 83-85. I don't keep the heat lamp on all day. Only when I notice that the ambient temps or the cool side is a little low. Let it run for about an hour, turn it off. I'm like my own thermostat LOL!

On the first day, he was up all day roaming around trying to get a feel for his new home trying to figure out why the heck he was moved. He slept the whole night (I know because I'm a worried snek mama). On the second day, he happily shoved himself into the log hide and was asleep all day! I am proud to say, he has now successfully realized that he is nocturnal! He doesn't live up to the name sake though. He's never balled during his time with me when I moved him, scared him, annoyed the crap out of him. He used to immediately go to a striking pose and would often strike if I walk in front of the enclosure. He has now settled down and doesn't even care if I place my hand in front of him from outside the terrarium.

I'll be offering him food this weekend and see if he takes. Although I have no doubts that he will considering his (previously) strikey attitude! I'm looking forward to handling him after his acclimation period. He's quite a character.

Sorry for the overkill of a post! If you made it this far, thanks for scrolling your eyes across the screen for this long! I appreciate your time. :D

    Until the next over-worded post,
    Jenin

Congrats on your first snake. I'm up to 6 now and I still get anxious when I get a new one.

Thank you so much! Yeah! I was shaking when I was unboxing him! It's like opening a present that you already know what's inside haha!

Thank you so much! I know how addicting these balls can get, but for now I'll only have room for one! Maybe in the future 😉 Haha.

They're so gorgeous, possibly my favorite single-gene morph out there! How old is yours?

Hey new snake mama, congratulations on your new baby! I read you bought a climbing log/hide from petsmart. I'm not sure which one you have, but I had one that I purchased at petsmart as well for my first BP and he shoved himself way deep inside. I got scared thinking he was stuck because he packed himself in so far and deep and it was feeding day! I tried feeding him and he didn't come out or strike at the rat. Took him three or four days to finally see him out of it, so then I immediately removed it. I recommend doing some more searching around here on the site and you'll find more instances like mine and how they filled up the log or just removed it if you do choose. You can also see examples of it on YouTube. I hope this gives you some insight and helps!
