Heating

Okay guys i just got a new uth mat , i dont have it directly touching the glass of the bottom of the tank because i dont want the glass to get hot enough to burn her . Instead its resting on the surface of what her tank is sitting on, therefore her tank is about 1/4-1/2 inch above it and the heat should be trapped in there . My question tho is , about how long should it take to heat her tank up ? Its a 7w matt and a 10 gallon tank (shes still a baby) . So far it doesnt seem like its adding to her heat at all and its been slightly over an hr

Regardless of whether it is indirect or not, you MUST have a thermostat to control your temps, and provide temps within proper range, it will also prevent over-heating, and not become a fire hazard (their are things worth than a burn with unregulated heat), and if you do have a thermostat you will not have to worry whether there is contact or not.

As for the time it takes it's variable depends on the heat mat, space between the mat and enclosure, substrate, thickness of the glass, ambient temps etc, you will have to wait and see.

Unregulated on another surface can cause a fire.

So if anyone's still watching this thread , im going to be ordering a thermostat likely tomorrow , and im keeping the uth off till i have it . But id like to know what i should set it to when i get it ? I know ive been told dont let the temp of the glass get above like 90-92 , so should i set it a little lower than that ?

You set it to whatever you need to to be at proper temperatures.
What the settings are in my house ill be different than yours.

You need a digital thermometer with probe, a very reliable one is the acurite 00891 for $12 on amazon. You could also get a reliable temp gun but they cosy more than the acurite. You put the thermostat probe sandwiched between the uth and bottom of tank then you put the thermometer probe under the substrate right against glass over the uth and set the thermostat so the thermometer never reads hotter than 94.
