When is it appropriate to start giving advice about husbandry?

I've asked a lot of questions on here and many of them have been, in retrospect, kind of stupid. But I learned from them. I've only had a BP since May and I still don't know entirely what I'm doing, but I do know a few things about a few things. If someone asks a question I think I can help with, is it okay to give an answer or should I wait until a pro comes along? (I mean, eventually they will anyway) But I know that if you're really desperate for an answer, it can be frustrating to wait and I'd feel kinda bad if I think I can help but I don't.

I mean, even this might be a dumb post. I don't want to overstep any (more) boundaries here, ya know? But at the same time, if someone wants to know how to, say, switch from live to f/t and I can easily answer from experience and research in two minutes... is that ok?

It's appropriate to give advice whenever you're ready to listen to and take some in return. :gj:

I mean it's a free forum so you can answer whenever. It's always better to answer with experience and if you aren't sure you can always say things like "I could be wrong so don't take my word for it, but" or "in my personal experience". One thing I've learned is that if you are wrong someone will tell you and they will tell you quickly [emoji14]

Well, Eric, I recently had a conversation with someone who felt the same about the latter part and he gave me some advice about my snake's RI, which I took. Snake is already doing better. So I think I'm on the right track. :)

There are few professionals when it comes to reptile husbandry but there are lots of varying opinions and different methods of keeping reptiles. If there's something that works well for you and you think it could help other keepers, then by all means please share. We're all here to learn how to care for our animals to the best of our abilities. Experience does count for something IMO but I learn from newer and more seasoned keepers.

Well, I WILL say that I have a savant-like ability to give oral antibiotics, so if anyone ever needs help with that... trust me. ;)

When you have solid hands on experience, not something you read or heard somewhere that you regurgitates. And by solid hands on experience I am not talking about what works with your one snake that you have had for 6 months (example)

Giving advice also means understanding the experience level of the person you are giving advice to, for example telling someone new to think outside the box, when they are already experiencing issues that are considered beginner issues can be disatrous, which is why there are PROVEN husbandry methods that if followed will work.

To me it's do what I tell you not what I do and trust me what I do is considered outside the box.

BTW word of cautio putting a snake near your face is the best way to get tagged as the temperture of your face/head is higher than the rest of your body, something new people never realize.

This is a public forum so you can give advice BUT you better be able to take some heat if you are wrong too. ;)

Deborah- understood. And I would never, so far, give advice that I have not seen experienced forum members tell people in Husbandry, or on caresheets. Re: snake near face, that's good to know. I suppose I was a little reckless then because getting tagged doesn't bother me at all (hence why people ask me to handle nippy snakes) and I've never had that problem with that particular snake, but I'll keep it in mind.
