Do you find it hard to say good-bye to your snakes?

Ok, I am considering selling or trading some of my snakes and i’m finding it difficult to let them go. I got most of them as hatchlings and have enjoyed caring for and handling them. All of them have names and fit into the world of Wicked/Wizard of Oz in my mind lol. I’ve grown attached to them and worry about their care and futures in the hands of others. I know breeders do this all the time and other pet owners do too. Do u find it hard? i don't know how to explain it.

I just think I’ll miss their cute scaley puppy faces.

Hmmmm, when you are ready to sell that cherry bomb please let me know. I'll send you pictures every day so you don't miss it.

My girls always give me a hard time about selling babies. They want to keep everything. The rule is they don't get named unless they are staying. Seems to help.

I was so sad to have to sell my male hognose when I moved that once I was all settled in to my new life I contacted the guy that I sold him too and offered him more than he paid to buy him back... Luckily he said yes and I have my little Huffington back.

Right now I only have my two pieds and I can't imagine selling them. I'm very attached to them. However I have bought and sold close to 50 snakes over the years and I only regret letting go of a few of them. I have to admit that I have been much less emotionally attached to some than others.

Absolutely. The snakes could care less but it's hard not to get attached sometimes. You never really know how good the home will be but I'll occasionally offer large discounts on particular animals when the buyer impresses me with their enclosure and enthusiasm. I'm also not hesitant to deny a sale if I feel the snake would be going into a subpar environment.

The only snakes I've rehomed so far are babies I've produced, and those have all been local. Their new owners give me updates on them too. It helps knowing that they're well cared for and appreciated. I also make a point of not naming a snake I intend to rehome.

There are a few favorites that will never be rehomed unless circumstances get really dire, but that has nothing to do with morph, value, or even species.

The animals that I am sentimentally attached to are not animals that I would ever consider re-homing unless it was absolutely necessary. The others were acquired, produced with the knowledge that at some point they would be sold.

When you get in the business of selling animals or even feeding off animals you need to learn to have some emotional detachment, growing up I used to work at a farm every summer and this is something I learn very early on.

i feel very good that my BP went to a loving home. got an update on her this weekend and they are doing awesome! :gj:

100%. I sold all the hatchlings from my first clutch except one fairly quickly. It took me about a year longer to sell the other one. It had something to do with its feeding habits (or lack thereof) but I grew attached and kept her far longer than I should have. It made it hard to let her go.

Right now I'm struggling with the idea of selling the first snake I ever purchased. He's a normal male ball python so he won't be useful as a breeder and I could really use the extra slot in the rack. I'm really struggling because I don't know if whoever takes him will take care of him like I do. I think I might offer him really cheaply to a good home that already has ball pythons and is knowledgable about their husbandry.

I have been thinking about selling my big albino girl lately. I think she is going on 6 breeding seasons with no eggs. Four years with another breeder an two with me. She reabsorbed last season and I am pretty sure she did this year also. I don't know if I can actually get rid of her though. She is a really good pet, but she eats like a pig.
