    Unexpected death
My large female hognose died unexpectedly tonight. She refused feeding the last four attempts (over about a three week period) which is odd for her (hognose are usually trash cans and she's no exception). However I didn't really think much about it since she's a good size and it is breeding season (I did put my male in with her but never saw any locks or any signs of ovulation). She looked in almost perfect condition when I opened the tub, in fact it was only the fact that she didn't hiss that tipped me off that something was wrong. I had to flip her over and really check to ensure she was dead and not just extremely lethargic because she looked 'normal'. I had attempted a feeding three days ago and she had hissed and displayed but showed no interest in eating. The only thing 'wrong' on her when I looked was the appearance of a noticeable widening of her tail just past the vent that wasn't there when I last looked in on her.

I feel just awful that I didn't take her going off feed more seriously, but I'm so used to my snakes going on and off feed as they see fit that I didn't think anything of it.

I'm not sure how old she was, I've had her two years, she was an adult when I got her.

She had the best personality! Every time I opened the tub she was right there to hiss at me and came out and lifted her head up at me, but if I picked her up she calmed down instantly.

This is her. You can see that she was a big gal! My male was dwarfed by her. I checked on him (he's been eating just fine) and he's full of hiss and vinegar as usual.

Man, sorry for the loss pl! She looks huge. We really are at a disadvantage keeping reptiles who so often don't let us know when they are sick. Next thing you know is you are planning to bury them. They crash rather quickly. It's not your fault either bc we have little to no control over the morbidity and mortality of a reptile. Stay in peace and not pieces.

I'm trying not to 'take it personally', I know it happens and I know two other hognose owners who have suddenly lost their females for no apparent reason as well. I'm just sad, she was such a great critter.

Hugs! Hardest part about pets is losing them.

it's always sad to lose a pet. the good news is that you will have fond memories of this animal for the rest of your lifetime.

I'm sorry for your loss too Pied. Unfortunately these things happen unexpectedly sometimes. It's all part of the circle of life though. Hang in there.
