Contract when adopting?

I'm adopting a ball python from a "rescue" that is run by some person who sounds very... tumblr-esque, for lack of a better word. Their husbandry is a mess in my opinion and she looks down on breeders and rack systems as a whole but the thing is that they say I have to sign a contract saying I will not breed the snake I am adopting.

Is this even legal and if not do I really have to honor the contract? The snake is question clearly has shedding problems and the enclosure she/he is a tank and has no hide. At this point I just want to rescue the snake away from their "rescue."

First time I've ever heard of something like that...

i remember reading about the contract debate a few months back. some peeps were like screw it, imma do whatever i want and other peeps were like breaking the contract gives our community a bad name.

Is it legal? Yes.
Many rescues have stipulations on their animals.
More reason to go to a breeder I you don't want to stick to you word of signature. ;)

Like official rescues right? this is just some person running it out of their bedroom.

When I got my first snake, the "rescue center" told us not to breed him, and made us sign a certificate with that on also. I guess they try to limit the amount of snakes they get in by telling people not to breed, or allowing inexperienced people to potentially breed when they know hardly anything about breeding.

But I guess its up to you if you want to breed as long as the snakes health is good and can make sure you get reliable homes for the babies. But if you do decide to breed- Dont tell them! (Just in case)

I think it's a moral issue for each person to decide but I usually like to go with my word. Tell them your plan and share your experience and see what they say, is this animal that crucial to your breeding plans?

If the animal is in anyway in danger do what you need to get it replaced somewhere else forget about keeping your word otherwise you should do what you say and oblige the other persons wishes.

For me it would be very tempting if it were a panda pied or rare gene animal but those don't usually get rescued I imagine.

As someone who works at an animal shelter with an adoption contract we have clients sign, let me just say that our "contract" isn't actually legally binding. So just bear in mind that even if you sign something, even if that something is called a contract, that doesn't necessarily mean it's a legally binding document. You'd want to check it out with a lawyer to be 100% sure, of course.

On the one hand, you can do as you wish with your property, and unless YOU draw attention to it, who would ever know?

On the other hand, the world has quite enough ball python breeders already.

I'm curious how much this person is making their adoption fee, and if it's a firm fee for all the snakes, no matter the morph?

About your question, I have no clue if it's truly legally binding- but if you are really planning on breaching the contract anyway, might as well get a snake from a nice breeder and save yourself the trouble.
