Breeding normal bci

Do many people breed normal bci together or with a different morph? It seems on Facebook and other sites the normal is an unwanted breed , I like them alot but just curious if people really don't find them that interesting or are many peope just out for the different strand boas ?

If you search you will find different breeding styles. Generally, morphs mean money as well as demand.

While I love looking at morphs, I prefer commons/normals and locality snakes myself. :)

2) Most breeders don't pair normal/classic BCI's because they will get some from their non-recessive pairings anyway.

I consider myself in the 'old school' class of reptile keepers, which still appreciate the more basic and classic morphs. I for one think that normals and simple albinos are some of the best looking snakes around.

As mentioned, most morph pairings will yield you a few normal that might be het for something. So no real point in breeding a pure normal unless it is a specific locality and you are breeding for a pure local standpoint. Otherwise, morphs tend to sell faster and for more cash. I personally am a morph guy for the most part but I do like some local ones namely Hog Island and Pucallpa. At the end of the day, breed what YOU like but be prepared to possibly have to house and feed the extra mouths until they sell.

I tend to enjoy "Mother Nature" colors and localities first and morphs second.

There is also a bit of a question as to what "normal" means. The Common BI, unless sold with locality data could be a mix if sorts. People refer to these snakes as Colombian BI (Formally BCI) but that isn't always the case.

You can have a normal boa that has been selectively bred from the most beautiful specimens taken from the wild and wind up with something like this.

That is my "Normal" Barranquilla, Colombian BI. Keep in mind he was younger there and the photo was snapped in direct sunlight. I would hate to see this "Common Colombian" line started by Gus Rentfro disappear. Luckily Legacy Reptiles works with this stock. I actually bought this snake from them when Mr. Rentfro was sold out.

He still looks good today at almost 4 years old.

There is some value in breeding normal to normal if you are maintaining a locality IMO. The people that I have seen that do this are not typically motivated as much by the $$ as they are the by the love and enjoyment of the species/locality of the boa.

When I was heavily into trialing protection dogs, we always talked about breeding. The big phrase that came up was always "What is this paring going to do to improve the breed?" You can apply it somewhat to any animal. If you are just pounding out litters of whatever to make a quick buck it doesn't matter what you have, as you are just breeding for the sake of breeding and hoping to score some money. If you are working on a line, or maintaining a line and are thinking about the species you are on to something. Habitat destruction could theoretically wipe out some of the most beautiful wild boas on the planet. Anybody breeding to keep boas like that around has my vote!

In the end different folks like different things and it is a personal choice to breed your animals as you see fit.

There are also "normals" like pastels that are fairly popular, and you can get some very cool-looking boas linebreeding like that! Even without any morph influence (including any hets), you can get high color and wacky patterns, since even normals can easily have aberrancies, and they sell for much higher than a "regular normal" because of all the work it takes to get to those colors. Nothing compared to a high-end morph, but the animals are spectacular when bred well. I don't see as many of these as I do morphs, but "normal" is a very non-specific word. Boas come in so many colors and patterns as normals, although that could be from all of the mixing of blood from different species and localities. I love normals and morphs equally; a good-looking snake is a good-looking snake!

Also Gio, your boy is making me seriously consider getting a Barranquilla at some point in the future....

I'm really lucky to have this boa. The morph that looks like this is the Key West boa. Jeff Ronne (Boaphile) has them but the last I saw they were $$. I prefer the locality and my guy was not a lot of $$.
