    Texas herp laws?
Hey guys, I'm sorry if I asked this before.. I searched and didn't find anything though.

When I move out, I'm thinking I want to live in Texas. Seems to me it is one of the better states as far as exotic animal laws go. I found a law page that outlines exotic pet laws: http://www.api4animals.org/372.htm

    It says:
'No person may possess a dangerous wild animal without first obtaining a license (certificate of registration). Dangerous wild animals are defined as lions, tigers, ocelots, cougars, leopards, cheetahs, jaguars, bobcats, lynxes, servals, caracals, hyenas, bears, coyotes, jackals, baboons, chimpanzees, orangutans, gorillas, or any hybrids of the animals listed. However, there are no requirements for a person possessing all other animal not listed above, such as monkeys, wolves etc.'

No reptile mention there, but I was somewhere else and found that piranhas are illegal in Texas. That got me to thinking.. many laws don't list fish/birds/reptiles as 'animals'. I want to know if there are any statewide bans on large snakes. I guess it's legal to own a caiman, so it wouldn't make sense that boids would be illegal.. but who ever said laws made sense.

Sorry for the long post.. I just really want to know. I need to live in a big-herp friendly place.

Aww, you're going to come live in my state! Yay!

I really don't know what the laws are, but I know they are pretty lax. I guess it depends on what city you live in, so if you have a particular area or city you are interested in living in, I would look online call around and see what laws are in place. I haven't seen what Waco's are though.

Well I can't move any time soon, so I don't know where exactly I want to live, but I'm really just interested in state-wide laws for now.

I read somewhere that crocodile monitors are illegal in Texas..? I wonder if other large monitors are as well.. or if it isn't really true.

It should be easier to find this stuff on the net.

Yep will all be based on your city San Antonio were I live states "no exotic animals are to be kept as pets" well my next question is define exotic. There are half a dozen exotice pet stores in the city not to mention all the petco and petsmarts.

Shelby, I've heard this site has links under each state (scroll down for each state listed by region). Haven't gone thru it yet myself but maybe it might help you or lead you to the correct information for Texas.

    What site, Frankykeno?

No one knows of the state law? I just want to know if large constrictors and monitors are allowed at the state level.

the best way to clarify exotic animal laws is to call the state dept. of wildlife and fisheries.....or a state herp society(most have web pages that have the laws)....then you are getting more direct info...not just word of mouth stuff off the net.

or you could always move to Louisiana......

    http://www.lgchs.org/la_regs.html some herping regulations

http://www.lgchs.org/12ftrule.html just passed on April 7...not effective until august 1st
