Hunger strike

My bp has been on a hunger strike for 6 months now. I've been doing f/t rats for the most part. If tried a live rat once to try to break this fast. Will I be at risk for him to want live all the time??????

Has he lost weight? I had a female go off feed for 11 months.

Well he doesn't seem like he has lost a lot of weight, but I have no experience with fasting, nor the acceptable proportionate weight loss. As for feeding live, you would most likely have to feed him live for a bit, move him to pre-killed and then back to f/t.

I was once told after a six month fast, 10 to 20% is acceptable. So I guess at this point your still ok. Never had one fast any where near that long. But I heard of others. When I was younger, it was usally wild caught that would go on fasts like that. Hope this helps.

It sounds like he hasn't even lost 10% yet so that is not really a big concern. I have had them go over 7 months and loose about 15% body weight and still be fine. Are you trying to feed him every week? If so I would cut back to every two weeks until he starts eating again. It will save you food and he'll be less bothered. I watch for them to go from completely shying away from the food, to looking really interested in the food, even if he doesn't take it. That's when you know the fast is almost over.

At that point you should try a prey item that is smaller than they normally eat. So if you normally give him rat smalls, try a rat weanling. Think about after you've been sick with the flu and couldn't keep things down or hadn't eaten for a bit. Your first meal after tends to be something small or otherwise it may upset your stomach again. I find they are the same. You may even want to keep their first two or three meals smaller until they appear to be solidly on schedule, then you can bump it back up. Good luck

Thanks a lot, I've been doing every 3 weeks to almost once a month. Yea I've been doing weanlings because I didn't want to keep wasting small rats. Damn these fast lol
