    Got tagged
Changed the water in my BP's bowl and took the opportunity to handle him. Well he struck once at my face but missed and then again at my thigh and this time he was successful. Even though he is only 160g both strikes scared the excrement out of me. lol while I know it is no big deal it was still unsettling.

Do you you get used to this at some point? Just picked him (Cheapy) and the other BP (Pricey) up at a reptile show on 2/20/16.

    thanks, Dean

Wow that's wild I wonder why...were you moving quickly or touching near the head?? Maybe hungry? So weird I can't imagine my girl striking ever...

It happens, especially with hatchlings. They need time to settle into a new environment and to grow accustomed to new smells and sights. Just be wary of crowding them when you enter the enclosure bc they are very fearful of sudden movements and changes in position. It really is typical hatchling behavior.

Thinking about it he was in my hand in a striking (cocked) position and I should have taken a few moments to let him relax before I made any movements. My bad. Have held him several times previously with out any problems.

Funny thing is his tiny head transformed into a HUGE open mouth for the strikes. Not really huge but it seemed so at the time. lol

Your head is the warmest part of your body, NEVER hold a snake near your face or hold a snake near someone's face, if you do you are just asking for trouble, lucky for you it's a 160 grams hatchling.

In the mean time make sure it is well fed, and husbandry is optimum, and remember that hatchlings will be more defensive than adults.

Yes, lucky it wasn't a larger snake. I don't think I had him too close to my head but maybe I did. As far as husbandry I think it's good. 89 hot side with a uth and 80 cool side with a che for ambients both on a herpstat 2. Humidity at 52 and he has been fed a 15g f/t mouse weekly with the last one being on Sunday. I think I should have been more careful to let him settle down as I had just got him out and he was cocked and locked. Thanks for your suggestions, Dean

Babies bite. They just have to grow out of it. I have a funny one for you. I was holding one of my babies, and the little guy bit me. I laughed at it, and said is that all you got. The little sucker bit me again. Then looks at me like you want more. You will get bit,if you handle snakes long enough. It just comes with the territory. Just laugh it off and have fun.

Yeah, j did just laugh it off but the really funny thing is how watching the strike startled the stuff out of me even though I know it is no big deal. I mean he is only 160g or so.

My 770g female just tagged me for no reason. She was out exploring our bed, and for some reason randomly went into a striking position. Like a dummy I thought, she was being weird, so I put my hand in front of her face and bam got me. I'm not even sure what I was thinking doing that but I did it. My wife just had the beardie out, and we think she smelled it on her clothes.I guess what I'm trying to say is they were pythons way before they were pets. I don't jump as much as I use to, but it still startles me.

play with fire, you're going to get burned. play with snakes, you're going to get bit. the good news is that if the snakes you're playing with are BPs, you'll get bit a lot less.
