Very active ball python

Hello. So I have been reading over the forum for a little while now but finally came to ask a question. So this is my first snake/ball and my local breeder has actually been very helpful but I feel like I am bugging them a lot with questions. So I have had my snake for just over 2 weeks now. He is 8 weeks old. He is in a locking snake cage, with aspen substrate. There are 2 hides one hot one cold. The hot is from a under tank heater and stays about 92ish degrees +/- 2 degrees, the cold side is about 80 ish. He has a ceramic watering dish that he can fully submerdge into if he wants. I also have one fake plant in the middle of the habitat so he can climb when he wants. He has eaten twice so far(once a week) and they were rat pinkies. I don't have the ability to weigh him. oh an his humidity is right around 50.

So heres the thing. For the most part when I first got him he would go from hide to hide and every now and than stick his head out to the water bowl go about half in and than back to the hide. For the last 2 days he has been going super explorer snake. He is roaming around a bunch! plus he knows how his tank open and even though he cant get it he tried to use his head to slide the top open. I have taken him out a few times and he likes to wander. I tried making a cave out of a blanket and he would go in but come right back out in a few minutes max. Its like he is a snake on a mission.

I know every snake has a different personality but I just want to make sure he is ok. I also checked for mites and he doesn't have any... thanks for anyone help!

No worries, Welcome to the forum. :)

When I first got my bp she was exactly the same. I moved everything out of her viv except 2 hides and a water bowl and adjusted the temps and she was a different snake pritty much strait away. I think she was too hot and overwhelmed with so many things going on in the viv
I'm certainly not an expert but it worked for me

Maybe bump him up to rat fuzzies. Sounds like he's hungry and looking for food and a rat pinkie is probably too small for him. He should be eating rat fuzzies or hopper mice at his size.

I have a very active 8 month old male and a rarely seen 8 yr old female. Jimmy my 8 month old was my first and he has always been active more so in the day rather than at night. He will only feed during the day , refuses to hunt at night. It used to worry me because so much I read said they were non active nocturnal animals. I have noticed that he will go into super sleuth mode the day or so before feeding day. And at times will stay in hunt mode for several days after feeding. My girl Lola only comes out of her hides during the witching hour , I had to set up baby monitor cams to actually catch her out. And she is only active for about 3 hours right before day breaks. I have to leave her meal on a paper during the night in order for her to eat. I myself prefer an active snake. it makes it easier for me to determine his moods, when he is about to go into shed, or if something else is off.

agreed.

So I got him another rat, but went to a fuzzy from a pinkie. He ate it right away. And that was after he just ate 4 1/2 days earlier. But he has been more calm since he ate... growing snakes are hungry I guess haha.

Excellent that's great news !!!!

Baby BPs can easily eat hopper mice or rat fuzzies. When my gal was a baby, she ate a fuzzy rat every 3 days but she was a pig. Mine was always hungry until she hit about 1000g. Now she hasn't eaten in about 4-5 months but is still fat and happily breaks stuff in her cage at night. I bet your little guy will easily eat a rat fuzzy every 4-5 days.

The first few weeks I got Louie he was a huge explorer and since then he has increasingly settled down. I figure the more they eat and bigger they get and more comfortable in their houses they are they relax and do their snake thing- coiled up, relaxing in their favorite hide!
