Kane heat pad

So in my previous post I wanted to save money by getting flexwat instead of another zoomed uth. Well after shipping I was only saving $5. I went to my local reptile store and they are moving and having a huge sale so I picked up a 18"x18" Kane heat mat for only $30. Is it really ok to put this inside the enclosure? Controlled by thermostat of course with a thermometer probe stuck directly on mat. The manufacturer says its fine but have any of you others used Kane inside enclosures? It would be really convenient for me. I could just drill hole in vision cage for power cord and I would think it would help with the heat warp I hear with vision cages.

Those are expensive mats. You saved about 70-$90.

It should work fine. My understanding is that they are waterproof.

Pat yourself on the back because you seriously scored. Yes, put the Kane in the enclosure, regulate it, and use it. Those are designed to be used with dogs that live outside or with livestock like farrowing pigs and calves, nothing your snake will do can hurt it.

The only downside to them is regulating them; a t-stat probe doesn't attach easily to it (and don't you dare use tape!) because it's not flexible, and the probe has to go into the enclosure to be in contact with the matt. Most people use heavy-duty dimmers with them, which you can find online.

Yeah they were 109.99 marked down to 29.99. I never heard of kane so I looked them up when I got home and seen lllreptile sold the 18x18 for 85.99 so I was like score! I use lamp dimmers for everything. Beardie basking lights on dimmer, Leo's uth on dimmer. So I'll just use my dimmer that's on my bp heat pad for the Kane since his old enclosure will be empty for now. I like the dimmer bc when it gets a little colder at night the temps drop 5 degrees and the day time back up without me having to adjust it.

I can't use electric tape to stick thermometer probe to mat? What should I use? I have a temp gun but I like to have a thermometer as well so I can compare the two readings.

you could hot glue it onto the mat, also just saw on Kane's website they sell an integrated rheostat that you can wire into the mat.

I had one of those with my boa years ago. You got a check of a deal. I would have bought all that they had and either resold them or kept them for future. They are a great heat pad.

Wouldn't the mat melt the hot glue? I just got back home from the store. Bought the last 4 along with some other goodies lol. Not sure what I'm going to do with them but I'm sure I'll find something. I always seem to be in a situation that I can't help but to bring home a new herp. I'm new to BP's but I'm already looking for another. Just can't seem to find a sugar female.

No, low temp hot glue like what you would find at a hobby store has a melting point of 120F, industrial has an even higher melting point. I have used hot glue to tack down probes with no issues. You don't put glue directly on the probe, but you put it at the base where the wire attaches the probe. Then you just have to make sure there is no way for the animal to get tangled in the wire. I have glued the entire run of wire before, and I have also used the plastic wire routers that you find at hardware stores, instead of using the adhesive tape on it I glued those down as well.

Ok hot glue it is. The power cord for the Kane mat and probe for thermometer will run through a hole drilled in vision tank and will be under substrate so he won't be able to be tangled in it. Right now I have the probe for thermometer running from middle of hot spot to the closest edge then running around the edge to the corner of the glass door all under substrate and he hasn't been tangled yet so I should be ok. I have the hydrometer probe running through the top corner of screen taped along the side and top but it doesn't look that great so I'll be drilling holes for all of it and plugging holes so it looks clean. Just have to wait for my v400. Hopefully it doesn't take the 2-4 weeks vision says it takes.
