Looking for answers... morph and age
Hi all- This is my inaugural post at BP.net forums. We took in/adopted a very sweet, healthy female BP this week and I'm just not sure of a couple things. Is she is a 'normal' or a 'paintball' (I'm leaning towards the paintball). So here's a link to a couple pictures I put in the image section. After eating two days ago (small mouse), she weighs in at 220 grams. I know she is at least 6 months old, but I can't seem to find a good reference to determine age from weight or length. I'm thinking under a year anyway... Anyone care to venture an educated opinion? Thanks so much for the help...

Welcome to BP.net. There is no standard reference for determining the age of a ball python based on length or weight. They each grow at their own pace, and growth rate depends on multiple factors.

I see a pastel, as far as age based on size it depends on a lot of factors, size out of the egg, how fast the animal was started, whether the animal was maintenance fed or not, whether the animal is a picky feeder or not, fast, prey size offered, frequency etc I have seen 1 year old weighing 1000 grams just like I have seen some at 200 grams..

The only way for you to know would have been to get the info from the person you acquired the animal from, this info is generally provided when you buy from a reputable breeder.

Its a pastel and age is never a good thing to guess. I have a mojave who was 360g at 20 months old. This is because she did not eat well, but the previous owners refused to feed her live. She is a strong eater now and has gained a lot of weight since I started her on live. So your BP could be over a year depending on how the previous owner fed her.

THANK YOU, ALL! There are so many similar genetic examples out there and it's quite confusing, as so much cross-breeding has been done. But yes- after finding some example pix, Pastel does seem to capture the description the closest and makes a lot of sense.

This sweet girl appears very healthy and friendly so I couldn't say no... and didn't think to ask too many questions at the offering. I'm going to say 8-12 months old and that's close enough. While it would be nice to know more... she is eating, alert, bright eyed and curious. That's what matters. Now I just need to get her moved into a better habitat than she came with. Free is never really free...
