    digital temp measurements
(I'm putting this under BP husbandry even though the viv in question houses a king)

Digital thermometer ($10, no stamped brand name) from Amazon in the last couple of months. Kept reading mid 60'sF on the cool end. Whenever I put my hand in, the viv felt warm. (RHP running)

Placed an (gasp) analogue thermometer ($25 Cheesemaking.com - for yogart) in there, and it reads almost 80F. These two are within an inch from eachother. I trust this dial thermometer - it has never messed up the cheese or yogart, and matches a couple of glass cooking ones (mercury?) I have that I won't put in the viv for fear of broken glass.

I no longer trust digital! None of them!:mad::mad:

Now, looking for suitable analogues (quality - not Zoo Med) that can be mounted on the cool ends. (digitals with probes for the warm end prob. can only be checked for accuracy, not replaced with dials; as far as I know, the dials never come with probes.)

    Grrr....

Yeah I had a similar problem with two digital hygrometers.

I bought cheap ones. I think with digital you get what you pay for.

I had two digital accurites in one of tubs this weekend, checking temps and humidity before putting my snake in there. I started with one, but I felt it was reading low on my temps so I put another in beside it. One read 72 degrees, the other read 77 degrees, both showed about 70% humidity. I replaced the batteries in both of them (out of curiousity's sake) and then one read 77 and the other read 76 degreees. It seems odd to me that a low battery would through the temp reading off, and maybe this was just a random one-off issue, but something that makes me wonder....

I reckon I must be the luckiest sumbuck on the form. My analogs are dead on.

I have one set over 13 years old and three sets at 3 yrs. All el cheapo Zoo-Med types bought at Petsmart.

I've heard countless dissing :rage: of analog gauges here. While I don't use them anymore them per se, it's always interesting to compare them to the digital gauges in the tank and see that both types have exactly the same readings - both temperature and humidity!

I think the problems many folks are having stem from the analogs getting submerged or contaminated from chemicals during aggressive cage cleaning.

I've kept my mouth shut for a few years. Figured that I ought to be honest here and swim against the tide.

Data is Data. I appreciate hearing others findings even if, and sometimes especially if, it bucks the trend. Don't look now but here come the villagers with torches and pitch forks. Gotta Go! Thanks for sharing.

The reason most people talk smack about analog gauges is because 98% of the time they're either horribly off, in the wrong spot or never been calibrated. I have an analog gauge for my humidor but even that was off before I salt tested it and made the proper adjustments. I also have a digital gauge to make sure that it's correct.

Digital gauges in general are an easier alternative for newer members and that's why I personally suggest them over analog ones.

Now about that pitch fork... 🔥🔥🔥;)

I've had two Accurites, the first one stopped working due to being thrown in the water bowl (the snake did it, not me!) and I'm using my second one right now. Both seem(ed) fairly accurate, although honestly, I never checked it with the salt test. I guess I should go check now, heh!

I like analog. I even use an analog scale which is definitely going against the trend.
