    protecting your investment
Now that I have a good chunk of change invested in my snakes I'm thinking I should really spend some extra $ to protect them. Does anyone have an extra insurance policy for their snakes? I had a house fire a few years ago and lost pets. It was horrible and didn't help that under my normal policy I got reimbursed for the cages but not the hundreds of dollars that were inside. Generator for their heat incase the house loses power? That's the big one I'm thinking I should do soon since we have cold Winters and never know when someone is going to crash into a utility pole.

I would get a generator. I live on the coastline, and we have frequent hurricanes. Sandy, and Irene both took my power out for days. I would be aware of the weather/issues you have frequently, and prepare for those. Do you have enough to get you through a week of various issues?

I do have large fishtanks, and I made sure to add that to my policy. If a tank broke, I would be covered for the water damage. Same applies to reptiles. If you have a large investment on the animals, then I would get more coverage. If there are break ins in your neighborhood, do you have some security? Locks at the very least. Things like that.

    **Additional Info**
pets can be covered as a scheduled endorsement to a homeowners policy/renters policy - however it is limited to: Domestic animals including, but not limited to, dogs, cats, birds, fish, guinea pigs, and pot bellied pigs.
The following can not be covered: Exotic animals including, but not limited to, snakes, wolves, bears, large cat varieties (e.g., mountain lion), weasels, ferrets, iguana, lizards. ( every state and every insurance company has different laws/rules regarding insurance so this could vary depending on the state you are in or the insurance company you are with. However, insurance company wise they are usually pretty similar in regards to what they will insure)

I would be curious to ask some of the larger breeders on here, how they handle it? I can imagine with some of these collections, that they are completely vulnerable.

    Thoughts?

Insurance can be tricky some insurance might actually turn you down and you could even loose your home policy because of it.

Now as far as the insurance you need to look for, you need to look for livestock type insurance that is being used by farmers.

Now pet pet insurance is just a big rip off you are better off putting money aside every month we had a few threads on this

Thanks for the links! With the monthly premiums close to $20 a snake it does seem like saving for veterinary issues is wisest but I still want to look more into ways to protect from fire and theft. Since they are also a source of income I see what you mean about a farmer type of insurance. If I figure anything out I'll share it. I'm heading to get new rack supplies tonight so I'll price some generators too and try to figure out how to even hook them up!
