Heating a T8 with an ultratherm

I was just wondering if anyone was using a ultratherm to heat a t8. I'm moving from a bin to a t8, and was wondering if it will heat through. I know they use less power and get less hot. The floor of a t8 is a lot thicker than a bin.

Yea, they should work just fine. They still heat up to about 90-95 so that should be plenty. Though personally, I'd just heat the T8 with a RHP and call it a day.

Like Misha said, I would use a RHP. I use them on my PVC cages as the only heat source and they work great. You gotta remember, a UTH is not going to heat the air. It heats a spot on the floor. The ambient air will either be the same as the room temp or a little higher if you are using fluorescent lights in the cage. A RHP will heat anything under it like a hide and then that item will radiate heat into the cage which will raise the ambient temp. And yes they will heat through a T8, just gotta raise it above your target temp for obvious reasons and then dial it in with a temp gun on the floor.

The reason I am using under the tank heat is that I'm going to have the divider permanently installed so I can use it for two snakes and I don't know how the radiant overhead would work. I guess I could just notch that divider as I put this thing together

When you have a T8 with RHP, where do you put the probe for the thermostat? Would you put it ontop of the substrate / paper towel, or hot glue it to the screen / plastic center of the RHP?

This is how I do mine as well. I also have the divider installed. I am running a 40 watt RHP on each side controlled by a Herpstat 2. Works great. With the probe approx. 3/4 way down (like the picture) I run my Herpstat at 85-86° (I cant remember exact setting off the top of my head) and it keeps my hot side between 90-92 and the cool side between 78-80. I have my RHPs centered in the T8 with the divider separating them.

I have my carpets and kings in divided T8s and I use the ultratherm uth's. I ordered the 8" cut out screens on the enclosures and use IR heat bulbs to boost the ambient temps for the carpets. This combination works great but I'll be switching to RHP's once I move the carpets into their individual adult enclosures.

I have mine similar to SKO's, but my probe is all the way at the bottom. That way, if I set my thermostat at 80, I know that the ambient temp where the snake is, is at that temp.

I have mine set same as Misha except I have mine about 1-2" above the substrate as I learned the hardway, that my snakes seem to love to target that or their acurite temp/humidity gauges as something place a turd on :(
