Depends on your heat source.
Overhead heating it really doesn't matter.
UTH shouldn't really be more than 1/2 inch or so.

I use paper towels. The whole bottom of my cage is covered in one layer of paper towel. Anything else and I start losing heat from my under the tank heater. Using one layer still works very good for absorbing moisture and poop poop.

I use cypress mulch, and i use 1 inch, with a u.t.h My temps are 86-88 hot side, 75-80 cool side. The thermostat is set for 94.

i have 1 BP who enjoys burrowing now and then. her hot side is 1/2 inch thick aspen and it's laid thicker moving towards the cool side.

I'm finding it really does not matter that much to my BPs. I'm an aspen user, and they always seem to move it around to get down to the bottom of the tank or tub. I seriously think it's in there more for me than them.
