Is anyone else surprised by how much they love their snake?
I've had Atticus for about a year now, and I'm constantly shocked by how attached I am to him. I love watching him, even when he isn't doing anything. If I think there is anything wrong, I'm immediately on the Internet doing a "WebMD" search - meaning, looking up posts and images of worst case scenarios and worrying. I was soooo happy to buy him a big new enclosure, not even caring about the expense, and I love imagining how he's going to enjoy each piece of decor that I add. I think he's the most photogenic creature (tied with my cats) on the planet, and I want to show him off like other people share baby pictures. He's not really affectionate, or furry, or interactive, and yet I think he's stupendous. Do they emit bonding pheromones or something? :)
P.S. I'm happy to be a part of this community of herp enthusiasts. Not all people understand the draw!

I'm definitely in the same boat. I've had Lucille for only a couple of months now, but I had saved up to do it with a bang once i did, and i'm so obsessed! Setting up her viv and getting her a couple real flashy accessories has been fun, and I get super excited when she comes out to 'put on her show' as I like to call it anywhere from 8-midnight as she slinks around and scopes it all out. My boyfriend calls it 'watching animal planet' because I do just park myself in front of her when she's visible :D
I don't know about you, but I live downtown in a reasonably big city, and I think it's this real almost primal need to have some 'wild' around us. I love my 50 gallons of wild after a long day of dealing with people and very people based things.

Not at all. I love all 7 of my snakes. Even the bitey one that I named after my dad. They each have their own unique personality and are special in their own way. It's hard not to get attached to them.

Yes, I was surprised to find out how dear to me certain snakes were/are. It was my two bees, and I think mostly because of their slight wobble. They are just so endearing. That endearment has spread to all of my snakes. Don't get me wrong, before I ever bought one I measured am I in this for the long haul? Do I like snakes that much (I liked their genetics that much but care and feeding was more my questions)?
It was only after having them for a year or so that the differences in their personalities began to show and my two bees just stole my heart. There is something useful to the human soul to be able to learn to read a reptiles mood from it's body language, I think because that language is so foreign to mammals.
Genetics attracted me, but behavior stole my heart.

My Ginger has a HUGE place in my heart, and even bigger in my husband's. She's an essential part of our family. Who knew??? Love her to pieces [emoji216]

I knew I would completely love my snakes, so wasn't supposed to be surprised- yet I'm still surprised by the extent that I love them? Crazy crazy. I do all the same things you do, including sitting and staring at them with hearts in my eyes even when they're not doing anything. LOL
I was just thinking to myself last night, "I love Cake and Vigil so much, IS IT WEIRD??"

when i was outta town the other week, i was worried about my snakes. it was a few days after a storm and power outtage and i was hoping the nothing disastrous would happen. thank goodness nothing happened. i need to find a someone comfortable enough with snakes that i trust to check the temps (at least) when i'm gone.
anywhoo... i would totes cut someone trying to hurt my Elphie and i would run through a burning building to save them. :P i love <3 <3 <3 these little guys. :)

Re: Is anyone else surprised by how much they love their snake?
I have only had my first BP about 2 months and my favorite time of day is when I come home from work and get to see my baby.I can't believe how in such a short period of time I can't imagine how I ever lived without her. She is still a baby herself but hands down the sweetest snake ever. I also saved up and did everything exactly right...and then last week bought another one..I couldn't help it the price was right the tank was on sale...how could I pass it up....I love them both and ...yup they are my babies and will never want for anything

Re: Is anyone else surprised by how much they love their snake?
I have the same, irrational, love for my snakes. I have a normal ball that is so adventurous and wants to get into everything - love her! I have a Hog Island boa that hangs onto me and makes it impossible to move (wraps around both my hands if they are close and available) and doesn't seem to want to let go or explore too much yet - love her too! They are both beautiful and mesmerizing in the way that watching them calms and soothes after a crazy day at work (or dealing with family issues). But also worrying about whether you are doing the right things for them - heat, humidity, feeding, etc. is tough to deal with. In ways it is this ensuring that you are taking care of them that is somewhat satisfying.

YES. The love for my snakes is ridiculous but yeah, the worrying is exhausting at times. It drives my husband crazy when I worry about the snakes... And to think I want more! ;) He always makes fun of me when he starts hearing the beep of my laser thermometer as I check all the cages and tubs.
My love for my snakes feel almost unfair because I know my emotional attachment to them is nothing like they feel for me. All I hope for is that they feel comfortable and safe in my care and that I can provide for them what they need and they know they are safe when they are with me! But still, I love them so much, it's stupid. :) They are my babies!
