Stroke of luck with finding a rodent breeder!

Hey everyone, this may seem insignificant almost, but it makes me so excited to say I've found a breeder near me! I've posted before with some issues I've had with Petsmart's frozen packaged feeder rodents, like the price, sizes etc.

Petsmart sells a box of 4 large adult mice for about $12 including tax, and I also bought 2 packages of small rats, which had 2 rats in each package, each package being $12 also! So $6 roughly for ONE small rat is ridiculous! You guys were right when you said pet store f/t rodents were expensive.

The breeder is about 20 mins away, and was my boyfriend's college friend who breeds snakes. We happened to ask her where she gets her feeders, and she says they breed their own. I was so excited 😄 (Although I felt kinda dumb for not thinking to ask earlier). She said she has a guy come from about an hour away just to buy from her. I got some weaned rats for a dollar each! I was so happy haha. The Petsmart I was going to was about an hour and a half away, plus the outrageous prices. This will save me a ton of money! Just had to share because no one else around here will understand why I'm excited, lmao

It IS a big deal!

I was overjoyed when I discovered Rodents on The Road was within "driving distance", and I drive 30 minutes each way to get there on my day off each week. I'm also breeding my own but cut the colony down to a dozen rodents for during the summer. Depending on things when it gets cool, I may do away with my rodents altogether. But I like my hairless line, which seems rare around here. Most people have rex and produce double rex and call them hairless. Mine are recessive hairless.

And I like rats. But the colony is a lot of work.

Yea rats are alot of work I only breed them for my hatchlings and buy the rest.I wish I could find a hairless by me be fun to mess around with them.

I'm taking care of the colony 4 hours 2x a week, 6 bags of rat crap to dispose of..
I was given the gift of a few double Rex breeders, and I am lucky for that. These things are up to 250g breeding weight in almost half the time as my others...

I read the only true hairless are genetic modified in labs, and double Rex was hairless.. But idk..

No, they weren't genetically modified in labs. It's a simple recessive gene, unrelated to the rex gene.

Ahh I reread and it stated the real hairless is not wanted because of health problems and not producing milk. Also said most hairless are in fact double Rex.

But if you have the real one, that's cool. But I'm happy with these double Rex.

Yeah, but double rex can grow patches of fur at times instead of being truly hairless. That's what I dislike, although I like curly haired rex. Around here finding quality rex is almost as hard as finding recessive hairless. Most of the rex rats mature into "slightly messy" coats, rather than the really awesome curly coats.

I was having the problem of finding fuzzies and hoppers and decided to breed my own mice n rats. Once a month I post on Craigslist about free feeders, males only and 7 per person.

Yeah I won't have the space or patience to breed my own, plus I only have one snake haha. Won't be efficient for me
