    Can i micro-chip a Burm?
Just as the title says. I want to be able to GPS track him in case of a theft or unusually fast escape. (hes very special to me)

    Yea that can be done.

    BUT...

It may be a problem when it comes time to change the batteries on the device.

Unless you find a way to keep a collar on a snake but that would only help if it escaped as a thief would simply remove the collar.

Then there is the option of a semi permanent mount on the snakes body but that would only harm it and also come off during a shed.

I think you are out of luck on this.

    RFID microchip - yes

GPS - I don't think GPS implants exist.

Not to be rude, but if you own a large constrictor, there is one thing you owe to the rest of the reptile world. You need to make it your priority to make sure there will not be an escape. period.

As mentioned above, microchipping is easy and usually permanent, but requires scanning. There is no tracking capability.

GPS tracking would require attaching or gluing a device on that would need replacement with every shed. It's not really feasible, and preventing the escape in the first place is your best best.

    Actually. . . .

Micro chipping is common and a requirement in certain states (Florida mainly comes to mind). But this is only good if the snake is found and scanned - like that of a dog chip, etc (AVID Chips)

There is no GPS tracking mechanism that will be usable at a consumer level, but you can get Radio Frequency transmitters that have batteries that last years and years, simply because they are just emitting a low frequency that can be picked up with a wand and receiver. These telemetry tracking systems are used in animals in the wild that need to be captured and recaptured. It is not a cheap system, but it is an option for some folks. It has to be surgically implanted, and is the size of roughly a AAA battery. But it does not get passed through their system, does not come off in shed, but of course is not traceable via any method other than radio telemetry.

http://www.lotek.com/nanotag.htm here is some of the new tech that is available in radio telemetry but this type of equipment is more geared toward researchers, not pet owners. Though, it could be used by both all the same.

I am more worried of the theft as i am sure he will not escape under my watch.

just getting an AVID microchip will be your best bet then, this way if found it will be identifiable and the burden of proof will be with you should you proceed to prosecute.

Of course, you can do as I and keep what you have under wraps to those who live near you. Keeping your location protected and inventory secret will help you reduce any and all threats of theft. Then again, I haven't heard of many giant constrictors being stolen lately, just back in the day when it use to be a gang initiation (at least in my part of the world)

    Lock on enclosure?
    Lock on room?
    Live alone? House mates?

I am paranoid - then again our neighborhood went from a rather nice place to live to pretty much ghetto in a span of five years. We have homeless drug addicts literally sleeping on the other side of our back fence. I added privacy fencing to the five foot chain link, and also made the fence about two feet taller. We keep both gates locked 24/7. I installed electronet fence around the livestock perimeter, which gives good shock, and the inside pens are each individually locked for the night. I also lock the goat area. Three dogs helps too.

I want to add cameras, but BF doesn't want to spend the money.
    Still working on that.

I think the micro chip is a good idea for your Burm.
Nothing is perfect, but every added measure can help.
