i went to go check on Nibby, and when i lifted up her little box, i saw a little pink baby!! i put the tank on top of my comp. desk, but left the little corner that she was in hanging off. :) i got to watch 10 of the 12 babies being born!! i got the best pictures i could... i didnt want to use the flash, that would be too bright. but here's what i could get!!! :)

so there's my 12 new baby mice!! i'm so happy, none of them came out dead and so far they all seem to be doing great.

Kara or Shelby, can you guys give me some advice for the next few weeks??
-when do they have to be weaned?
-when will the start growing fur/making noise?
-when will the females be able to get pregnant (no more babies for a while...)?

i'm open to any advice you can give me!! thanks!!

Heh, I just had my 3rd rat litter today, but it was the first time I got to see the birthing. Kinda messy with the blood, and the mother eating the umbilical mess and all, but very interesting :P

Congrats! Don't worry about the weaning, mama mice are quite good at fixing that. It seems we somehow ended up with a breeder mouse today, too. :sigh: At least we should have baby rats in a couple of weeks (looks like we have one knocked up).

Hey congrats! I think pink mice look like little aliens. Weird.

Mice and rats generally make fine parents, like Marla said, don't worry about weaning.

You probably know by now that they make noises right away. (noooo! shut up you stupid things!) Sorry.

Fur comes in at around 2 weeks. Eyes also open then.

Female mice/rats come into heat right after they give birth, so if she's with a male, she's already pregnant again. :)

Oh.. you mean when will the babies be mature? They can become pregnant very young, but you shouldn't breed them until they are 4 months old.

And give mom one or two days alone with her babies, then you can handle them for a few minutes daily to get them used to you.

    Good luck!

thanks!!! and no, she's not with a male. i gave her a nice clean tank all to herself. what i meant by when can females get pregnant is when should i take the males away?? i want to control who has babies and when.... so i dont want one of Nibby's sons suddenly mating with their sister. :)

when can i separate the males from the females?

When they are weaned, separate them. Weaning takes place at 3-4 weeks.
