    Stealth rat breeding?
I am looking to breed my own feeder rats to feed my bp collection.
the issue is that I live in a condo that does not allow rodents.

    I would like a small colony (1.2)

i am thinking that I will purchase a couple lab rat tubs and keep them on a private deck attached to our condo within a larger Rubbermaid tub. ( to minimize noise/smell)

has anybody else done anything similar? Would this sIze of colony produce an obvious amount of noise / smell?

    Thanks in advance,
Done from my phone, so I appologise for the poor grammar.

They thing with rats is your not going to be able to put them inside of a tub because you need lots of fresh air flow...and how big is your collection? In my opinion it is not even worth breeding feeder for anything under 20 or so snakes..it much cheaper to order bulk f/t....they average rule is one female for every snake...I have 2.10 that I breed for just hatchings and I cant even keep up with their 10 mouths....not to mention the 50lb of feed a month and a bunch of bedding(lucky I get free shavings from work) and all the time cleaning and caring for them...if I had a live supplier close I wouldn't breed rats at all....

HaveHave to agree, its not worth the work for a small collection, and you are running the risk of an eviction if you get caught. Even with my 40 or so snakes, I would not breed rodents if it wasn't for the fact that not all my animals will take frozen. The cost savings for me is overridden by the amount of time rodent maintenance takes, but I do have to keep cash outlay as low as I can anyway, so I just chalk it up to sweat equity.

Your main issues is proper airflow and temperatures since they will be on a deck.

Other issue I can guarantee that a day or another YOU will be noticed on cleaning day.

The smell can get quite strong unless your cleaning several times a week.

The productivity of breeders slows and stops once the temps get in the 80s.

You already answered it right there.
Move or buy a place where you can give the rodents proper care.

Currently went stealth in my apt lol. But they're just in a glad tank for the females and babies and then the makes are in a Rubbermaid with sons of hokes for air flow. When maintenence comes I just put the tank under my night stand throw a lil bit of clothes over it and I've passed for 4months now I have a fairly small colony. 1.2 and it has somewhat gotten out of hand I definately wouldn't breed unless u have ten snakes or more. I have 4 and am gonna have to remove a few because they will get too big before all the pythons can eat them. I ended up with a letter of ten I had no clue was coming then three days later had another 16. So in the matter of three days of the first litter I went to 1.2.26

I did have a small colony at one point in time, and I used these. I stacked them and gave air flow space with two 2x2's. Change bedding 2x week and you shouldn't have much smell at all. That is unless it's in the 80's at your place (that would slow or stop their production anyways)

Though I don't think I would breed rodents if I knew there was a chance of eviction. Some that would might consider breeding ASF's. I know someone who has been breeding asf for a while in their basement, and the basement is full pretty much wall to wall and I cant smell them at all. Even if you don't want to feed your snakes asf maybe you could breed them, sell them or trade them with someone who uses both. Just a thought. Good luck feeding/breeding or buying.
