BCI's New Home
Over the last month ive been working on a box for my BCI to live in. I have experience building houses, but very little when it comes to fine wood working. I think that minus a few flaws it came out pretty well. I definitely learned a few things along the way to fix / work on next time.
I built it from 1/2" white wood, stained, and finished with 4 coats of polyurethane. Then it sat in the sun and my garage for 25 days to off gas.
The box itself is 100% done, I'm just looking for the right pieces of wood to put inside, and also I'll be switching to cyprus to match the wood theme.

Hey I like that TS!
Job well done. I like how you have the doors swing out of the way too. That's how one of my tanks work and I find it very practical. Especially at feeding time.
Your big girl seems happy too! :)

Re: BCI's New Home
Thanks Reinz!
My original plans had doors that swung down, but i couldnt find hinges sturdy enough to mount to 1/2 inch. I switched to swing out, and I'm glad i did.
Did you notice the 1/4" gap on both doors? I copied the idea from boaphile. Apparently it allows me to not hack up the box for big ol air vents ;)
Here's an added pic of the top finish. If only the whole box came out this nice...

Your cage looks great. Your boa seems to like it as well. Just one question, how did you attach you hinges and latches to the plexi glass?
-
Hey great job man! What did you end up sealing the wood with?
-
I did not catch that gap in the doors, but what a great idea! You did a good job with it.
And wow, that top looks fantastic! Hope it doesn't get scratched.

To attach the hinges, I predrilled holes for the screws. Then I heated eat screw with a flame for 10 seconds and slowly hand screwed it in. It melted the Acrylic and hardened into place. The end of the screw was a bit long, so I cut with wire cuters and put a bead of hot glue to cover any sharp edges. If I have any problems with this, I'll just be switching to the rounded nuts and bolts.

Thanks Josh! You did help me so you can have some credit :P I sealed it with Helmsman Spar Urethane, Satin type. I love the way the finish looks, just off-gassing takes FOREVER...

Thanks again Reinz. I plan on making a few more of these, and having them in a stack. This one may have to go on top because I dont know if i'll put as much time into the others...
You said you were having someone local making your cages? Any of them done yet?

Mine are supposed to be finished in a few days. They are PVC.
I spent a few hours last night cleaning and rearranging furniture and tanks to make room for these enclosures.
I'll post some pictures when once I get them set up.
