Stimson Python

Hi.. lm new to this site.. Have had my snake for 3 mths now.. Shes bout 6yrs old...Have fed her twice since lve had her but she hasnt eaten her 8wks.... Any suggestions...Thankyou

She should be fine as long as she doesn't loose alot of weight in little time I've had some of my snakes go off for up to 6 months but I do have mostly ball pythons

Seems odd, anteresia are generally garbage dosposals. How big is she, what was she feeding on, what did she take for you when she did eat, what size is the enclosure, temps, etc.

Hi Sandii, welcome to the forum.

Being that you are in AU we know that you feed frozen thawed. I know your seasons are somewhat opposite of the U.S., so it is winter or ending?

You've had two feedings so your enclosure must be proper and I'm sure that have checked your husbandry?

Can you walk us through your feeding process please. Feeder type, how heated, is room scented, how?, snakes response?, how is food offered?


Being winter, there is a chance of a late hunger strike, but doubtful.

The member, Zombieassassin99 has some Stimpsons. Maybe he will chime in.

Thankyou guys for your welcome.. ... Just learning how to use this Forum as never used one before... Yes its winter in Australia atm..... l've been feeding my girl dead rats which l buy frozen from the pet shop.. Since l've had Sally lve only fed her twice.. Her temperature in tank is roughly 32'C but goes down to bout 28'C during the night ......Room not scented.. l offer her the rats on the long scissor looking utensils and dangle the food in front of her.. She comes up to it but backs away like shes scared of it or just totally disinterested.....Hope l've covered the answers thats been asked.... l did try feeding her again last night but she still refused... She seems happy enough tho....She is about 3 and a half foot long...

How big are the rats you are offering?

Being 6 yrs old I figured that she was at least a meter in length.

Assuming that you have a proper sized rat, as Jclaiborne is getting at, I have found three more things are important to your feeding success:

Proper heat
Scenting
Temp gun (May be called I/R Temp Gauge over there, I know guns can be a touchy subject) Can be ordered on Amazon for under $30 U.S.

When your rat is defrosted, run your hot water as hot as it will get and rotate the rat's head and neck only under the water.

Until you get your temp gun, do this for about a minute. You want to get the head between 35 and 37 C. It will cool a bit when you get to the snake and scent.
Only do the head/top of the neck, you don't want to start cooking other body parts, while minor, it would be breaking down tissue.

Next, hold the rat with your hemostats and gently wave it near the vents of the enclosure. This is before opening the enclosure. If need be, use a hair dryer and blow hot air in her direction.

This should act like a dinner bell, especially if she is hungry.
She will come out perky, looking all over the place. Very excited.

Open the enclosure and slowly move the rat around and try to make her come to it. You may have to pause or sometimes even bump their nose. But so it moves, by jiggling or waving motion.

If this doesn't work, being an adult, don't be afraid to do tough love and wait a month or 6 weeks. Maybe she is not hungry.
