This one is for the breeders
I often wonder, does anyone have interesting or exciting breeding projects that they don't tell anyone about?

I'm not asking people to tell me info about them ;) I'm just wondering if it was something that usually happens?

For sure they do. You got to have one special project that you don't want people knowing about....A until u prove it out or be have stock to sell that you are ot holding on to.

I'm not secretive, I don't care if others produce it before me as my breeding goals with the ball pythons are purely for my own enjoyment. Anyone could start this project next year and probably get to the end a couple years ahead of me without spending more than $1500 but then they'd miss out on the journey.

Step 1: Produce some outstanding female fireflies - check
Step 2: Find the nicest female dark morph/combo I can afford - check
Step 3: Prove out some het lavs and choose holdbacks - half check, 3 pipping now
Step 4: Raise lavs up to breeding size -
Step 5: Plug male lavs into firefly and dark morph, keep male visuals -
Step 6: Raise up male visuals, het lav, and plug into female lavender holdbacks -
Step 7: Buy a good pair of sunglasses -

I am always excited about eggs. That in my nature.

I do have one super long term project that I have discussed with several people. Others have mentioned it here as well but I am not open on it just because there are people that can get there before me but havent yet.

I completely understand large well known breeders like Constrictors Unlimited, NERD, BHB keeping things secret as they are working on things we won't see for a good few years,

The reason I asked is because I seen a post by a keeper on this side of the pond saying he has eggs from his 'mystery pairing' and I just wondered if it was a common thing that people do.

I wish I was able to keep things secret but there's nothing in my collection that I don't post pictures of [emoji23]

I fully understand keeping a new gene or extremely rare morph secret for a while as the way it is releases can have a huge impact on whether it holds value or not.

What I don't understand is keeping pairings of readily available genes secret. In order to believe that you are maintaining an edge by doing this you would have to believe that 1. Your the only one that thought of it and 2. Other people will change their pairings to match you. I doubt either is true in most cases. Most of us have spent way to many hours dreaming up new combos. If you thought if it, so did 1000 other people.
