    Normal x GHI/puma/firefly clutch questions
    Greetings fellow herpers!!!

    I had my first royal python when I was 15, had some more later on which I have sold. Recently I bought a neonate 1.0 normal that I want to breed and try my hand on that subject. He was the result of a Normal x GHI/puma/firefly clutch and here are my questions: 1) Is my 1.0 normal a het? 2) If it is, is it a Het for GHI, puma or firefly? Any help will be appreciated.

    Your normal is not het for anything because those are not recessive genes. It is just a normal

    Ok, so theres not a chance that If I breed her with a puma or firefly I'll end up with some pythons of those genes?

    There is a lot about genetics that you need to learn. I suggest searching this forum and googling questions you may have. In short yes you could get a puma from a puma x normal breeding and you could get a firefly from a firefly x normal breeding. BUT the normal would not be helping you odds, it is in fact lessening them.

    Puma= Yellow Belly & Spark
    Firefly= Fire & Pastel

    All four of the genes listed above are co-dominant so they can be passed on without both parents having it. There is a place for normals in the breeding world, but not to produce a new snake because you will never get anything more than the male you pair her with.

    Sorry I should clear up something from your original post. You said your normal was from a normal X GHI/Puma/Firefly. What that means is that the breeder had his Female normal breed with a GHI and a Puma and a Firefly. Not sure why he didn't specify which snake ended up being the father, but it doesn't matter cause they all are co-dom genes so your normal is just a normal

    Ok, Because the normal gene is more dominant than any other gene so the probability is it will mask whatever I breed her with. It makes sense. And yes I have a lot to learn, is my first time researching the subject. Thanks for the help!!!! Appreciate it a lot!!

    Depends what you breed to her BUT to simplify it............ If you breed a normal male to her you will get all normal because that is the only gene at play.

    If you breed a visual recessive to her all the clutch will be HET (whatever the male was) but nothing from her.

    If you breed any dom male to her the clutch can be a mix of whatever gene the male passes on.

    The normal gene is not "more dominant" than another gene. Nor will it mask another gene. Either your snake has a gene and expresses them (ie visual morphs like pastel, Mojave etc) or it does not (ie normal)
    The only exception to this is in genes that are recessive such as pied or albino. A normal looking snake may then carry the gene but the gene will only be expressed in its offspring if it is bred to another carrier of the gene.

    I definitely suggest forget thinking about breeding your snake for the time being to take advantage of all the information this forum and the Internet have to offer.

    Are you sure it's a female? I ask because you said 1.0, which denotes a male snake (you also said "he" at first). Was this a mistyped on your part, or was that how the snake was advertised and sold? If it's a male, I would advise you to forget about including him in any breeding plans at all, as normal males have zero breeding value.

    is male, hence 1.0, and thats why im asking questions about the subject and not breading at all....plus, I said is a neonate, he came out of the egg the first of july, the hatchery still has him until he grows a bit. I know I have to wait at least for him to be sexually mature (+-1 year) or be 800g from what I've read to breed him. Im just asking guys, Thats why I started this topic since google isn't so trustworthy...all the help is appreciated and all of you have been very help-full.
