Onyx ball

So i got an onyx ball python in a trade recently but ive seen some black pastels and cinnamons with the crazy pattern similar to the onyx. What othe characteristics do onyx have different from a black pastel/cinnamon?

Posting a picture would help us tell you exactly if your snaky is an Onyx or not, but Onyx is combo between Black Pastel and Het Red Axanthic. Honestly, it doesn't look like either cinnamon or black pastel. There are big differences like a completely whacked out pattern. Black pastel looks very much like a very dark version of a regular pastel. Black/dark brown instead of yellow. Cinnamons are dark but have way more defined alien heads then an onyx does. A good quality onyx should be black/dark brown with light/bright yellow.

I would definitely say that that is in fact an onyx and very nice one at that.

Thank you. I did have 2 others tell me it was but ive been having a difficult time understanding the het red gene. Not much info. I guess once i breed him and compare hatchling i will have a better understanding

Het Reds usually aren't a well known or talked about morph. It usually just darkens or reds a morph out. It can also whack the pattern out but this happens with very morphs. For example if you were to look at the nougat, het red vanilla combo, the patterns pretty much stay the same as a vanilla but reds the rest of the snake. Another example is the het red pastel. It has the pastel patterns but again will red the rest of the snake out.

Its very easy to tell gargoyles/onyx when they hatch out. They have a silver grey look to them that is a dead give away. They also should have busy, almost pixelated patterns on the higher quality ones.

Heres a clutch from last year. You can see how silver the gargoyle (far left) is compared to other hatchlings. You can also see how the het red gene affects the butter gene. The pastel butter het red and butter het reds in the center show partial blackbacks and have a slight silver wash out to them. They are easy to pic out next to the single gene butter on the far right.

Thanks for the picture. This made me get a better under standing what to look for. I cant wait to breed the onyx to my ivory female
