Help with identification?

Cat dropped this off on the porch today. Caught him, actually pretty sure it was a her, to make sure there weren't any wounds, and released back to the field where it was caught. General appearance makes me think basic rat, but it's body was 4-6 inches and its tail was quite short, maybe 2.5 inches. In my experience rats usually have really long thick tails. I'm in NC. Anyone have any idea as to what he/she is?

Looks like a Vole to me.
