Quick question about my UTH and the temperature
Hi all, I have a UTH for my BP's enclosure. It's the type that sticks to the underside of the tank. I use reptile carpet because I've seen some nasty burns from snakes burrowing through loose bedding to the glass. She has a large hide right over the UTH and I have a probe thermometer tucked under the edge of the hide on top of the carpet. For the longest time, it's been reading a perfect 90 degrees, sometimes dipping slightly to 88-89 but now it's starting to read 93, 94, even saw it at almost 96 the other day. This UTH does not have a temp control device but I was assured it would not get too hot. My BP just shed the other night but her belly is still pink. Could this be from too much exposure to that heat? Is 93-95 under the warm hide too hot?? Should I layer another carpet to cool it down?? Help and advice please!!
Side note: Matilda (the snake) does not look burned. She has no blisters or anything like that. Just a pink belly right under her thickest girth. Could that just have been from shedding?
Re: Quick question about my UTH and the temperature
The thing with uth's are if they are not regulated they can spike from the current source. Maybe when you took the temperature on top of the reptile carpet the uth was reading 90 but that is not a steady 90. 93 is too hot and 95 is hotter. There is a chance that that temperature is even higher bc the thermometer is measuring the surface temp. You need to remove the reptile carpet and any other substrate and measure the temps on the glass over the uth. Can you measure it with a temp gun? Grab some foil tape and cover the adhesive side then foil tape the uth back in place with a thermostat probe between the glass and the uth. You have to get a thermostat for the uth.

Ok, now I actually am concerned about a burn. I just took her out to check her belly and found this:
