    Query about my snakes genetics
    Hi Guys,

When I bought my male python last year, I was told by the breeder that she only bred "Het Pieds". She informed me that if I breeded him, there is a chance of the lady snake giving birth to a Pied Python.

Can anyone give me any more info on this?

    Thanks,

    Dan

By giving birth I obviously mean laying eggs.

I meant 'bred' not 'breeded' - Not sure how to edit a post.

Pied is a recessive gene, which means you need two pied alleles (I think that's the right term) for it to be visual. It sounds like your male is heterozygous pied, so he has one copy of the gene/allele. If your female is het pied or a visual pied, if you breed them there is a chance of producing visual pied offspring. If she's a normal, their offspring has a chance of carrying the pied gene, but they look like normals so you'd have to hold them back and prove them out to be sure. We call those "possible hets" and a het. pied x a normal would result in 50% (chance of being) possible het. pied.

    Edit: Hit "send" too soon.

Ah ok, thanks for the information.

What is the difference between "het" pied and "visial" pied?

Het means they carry the genes but its not visual.... visual means just that they look like a pied

Ah ok, so if I bred him with just a normal BP, is there a 50% chance she will have Visual pied babies?

No you cannot get pieds unless both parents have the gene, either both have to be hets or at least one het and one visual.... other wise as chkadii said you will just get normal looking babies that can possibly be het for pied

    Oh ok.

So I'll need to breed him with a het pied or visial pied to get some little pied python eggs.

Thanks for the help, really appreciate it guys.
