    Amount of substrate
I have a 55 gallon tank, right now we use aspen bedding and are switching to repti bark next week... Does anyone know how big of a bag I'll need? And how often to clean it? I spot clean every few days with the aspen, is it the same with repti bark? And I have read you can sanatize it and reuse? Is this true?

before I switched over to my own dirt mix I use to spot clean daily and do a full substrate change every month. Never tried to sanatize and reuse so I don't have any input on that.

Depends if your using all reptibark or using coconut on the bottom. I feel it's more a personal preference on how much to put in. I do a full change every month.im not sure about the sanitize and reuse tho... I'd be interested in that

I really like the fact that I can use bark for all my reptiles. I just got some myself so I will try the sanitation thing and let you know.

So how much substrate or how thick of a layer of substrate should you have in the enclosure? Is it correct to assume that you would lose more heat/humidity with too thin of a layer? Does it create a layer of insulation between the surface of your tank (glass, in my case) and the air, thereby a bit thicker layer would retain moisture longer?

Not sure on the size of your 55 gallon but in my PVC cage that is 48x23, I use about 48 dry quarts to get about 1-2" deep aspen. As for changing, I do full cage cleanings with new aspen every month and spot clean whenever needed.
