Carpet?

So I am looking at indoor/outdoor carpet for my snakes tank, it's really cheap and can be cleaned easy, so we were going to buy a few pieces to change out when needed to clean and sterilize the old one... Anyone use carpet? If we begin to have a humidity problem we are going to add repti bark or something like that that holds humidity we'll to the top and she will have a moss hide as we'll... Opinions!?

I had indoor/outdoor carpet for my iguanas way back when. They don't hold humidity hardly at all and you can safely expect that your snakes new favorite hiding place is going to be underneath it, but I suppose it should work if you can manage those little things. Are you looking at the stiff kind or the more flexible carpet-like kind? The stiff kind is a little harder to clean since it's thicker, but the flexible kind starts to fray and break down around the edges after a few cleanings. Shouldn't be nearly as bad as what I had to deal with since BPs don't have claws, though.

Be very careful. Your snakes belly scales are sensitive. If it's abrasive at all, I wouldn't suggest using it. I feel like carpet holds a musty smell along with humidity. You could try some Moss, off the ground. I personally prefer coconut shredding. But that's just me.

I tried out the "eco carpet" and didn't think about having to feed on cardboard, I thought the carpet would be safe, but loki lost 3 teeth on the first feeding (missed the prekilled mouse, got stuck on carpet for a few seconds and pulled out the teeth freeing himself.) It bothered me so much I took out the carpet. If you end up using some type of carpet, I recommend feeding on a plate/cardboard. Just my experience.

Also if the snake strikes at prey and misses, its teeth can get caught and it can pull teeth out which can cause infections. Someone on the forums had that problem not long ago. Plus I'm not sure how the carpet is easily cleaned as those things soak up piss liquid like a champ. I personally just use aspen and just throw it all out every month, Chlorhexidine down the cage, wipe it out and throw new aspen back in. And of course spot clean inbetween as needed.

We don't feed in tank, so losing teeth isn't a concern really, the indoor/outdoor carpet can be cleaned with soap and stuff..

indoor/outdoor carpet is not the same as eco carpet. Indoor/outdoor carpet is usually made up of a plastic fiber type blend woven through a mat and tends to be kind of coarse (think astro turf but not so fluffy) while eco or repti carpet is like a cotton fiber blend with lots of tiny fibrous loops making up a single sheet. There's a substantial difference between the two, could you clarify which of these things you mean?

Personally, I never have used indoor/outdoor carpet but I have used repti carpet. I would think the material carpet would hold more bacteria and mold though. Cypress mulch 100% is so much better. IMO! :gj:

This may not be an issue, but oftentimes stuff like indoor-outdoor carpet is treated or shampooed prior to being sold. I'd wash it once really well before ever using it just in case so you can avoid any chemicals irritating your snake.

That's the plan to sanitize and let air out for a few days
