Got to hang with retics.

I was able to take a nice 2 hour trip and get some "hands on" with a lot of SD retics and some reasonably sized adult male mainland breeders. Some where 7-8 years old and maybe 9-10 feet long and pretty slim like similar to some of the stuff in Reptile Experts' videos.

The mainland stuff seemed just a click too large for the setup I'll be able to provide if I want a display as my coastal is well on it's way to being a large snake. She is 5 and a half feet now and is not 2 years old until mid June and she'll be in a cage that is 24"-30" tall.

If I can make a super dwarf male work in a 48" x 24" x 14" I'll likely try.


If folks are interested, search hard in your home states or order now as the restrictions hit April 9.

These are really fun and interesting animals and I'd hate to see people on the fence miss out.

I would imagine a SD would be fine in that size assuming its high blood SD and not mixed with a lot of mainland and then roll the dice and pray it doesn't inherit the mainland "I'm going to grow to eat you and your family in 1 gulp" gene :P And yeah a 9-10' retic is going to be way too big for a 4' cage. I personally want to try and keep my snakes in cages that are about 3/4 the length they are so a 8' snake I would want in a minimum of 6' cage. That's why I'm debating on the Boaphile cages as I can order one 4' now with an expandable end and then add another 4' later. And then just add like 1 more for a total of 2 RHPs on one 4 footer and the other 4 footer would be the cool side. It's just I would want the 422d and that is kind of a killer in price compared to something like a AP T-10 or even better the AP T-13.

general rule of thumb for caging is square footage = max snake size. So a 6x3 cage can house an 18 ft retic (up to) and a 6x2.5 can house a 15 ft retic... etc etc

So a 4x2 cage can comfortably house an 8 ft tic, and this will include adult male crosses for SD / Mainland - as long as the conditions are met:
1) you do not push food through them
2) they are not a first generation cross - where the male was SD and the female was mainland
3) It is 50% SD Minimum

Heck, my Dwarf Goldenchild is a breeder and full grown right now, and he's barely 8 ft - he's 50% Jampea, + whatever % came from the goldechild bloodline itself. All things considered, he truly is the perfect sized snake.

Anyone know any breeders with some SD for sale, I've checked a few and I can't find one.

Well as of April 9th this year, you will only be able to buy from your state because of the Lacey Act. My advice would be to check for any Retic Facebook groups in your state and then go from there.

There are a ton on the market right now . . .

I have a few out there (adult / sub adult)
Vital Exotics has plenty of fresh hatch
Jason Reed has some higher end stuff going at an excellent price

Fauna Classifieds has some listed, Kingnsnake doesn't though it's mainly people listing on facebook since retics are pretty specialized. Join Retic Classifieds, and the Retic Market pages on facebook. That's your best place to start.

Thanks for the rundown Cody!

I'm pretty confident in Matt's sizes and stock. He's about 2.5 hours south on me and I'm not looking for anything exciting in the morph market. I'm looking at the most basic stuff in the SD size.

Both of my kids and I held onto little SD babies (6months) and they were extremely mellow. I was quite surprised at the calm demeanor of his stock. He admittedly has some wild caught stuff and was pretty up front that they were not easy going, nor were the snakes that had eaten the day before.

I'm keeping in touch with him so I may end up with something in the next few months.
