Doing a School Presentation

Anyone ever taken their snakes to school for a presentation? My daughter's fourth grade teacher has asked if we would bring our snakes in for a 45-60 minute "show and tell" after the weather warms up a bit more.

I was thinking of focusing on
- snakes are not evil nasty scary monsters,
- basic husbandry & care,
- leave the wild snakes alone, and
- benefits to the environment.

We've got 4-5 who have been used as diplomats in the past, we'll select the ones that visit the school based on shed cycles and lack of sausage butt.

And yes there will be plenty of hand sanitizer to go around.

I do presentations a bit for kids 1-4th grade (cub scouts / boy scouts). Things I like to focus on:

- Why do we have snakes (benefits)
- What makes snakes so cool (Limbless, no eyelids, ability to shed)
- Are they dangerous - Some can be - but why?
- Respect in the wild.
- Modes for taking prey (Force, constriction, venom)
- Cool facts (Largest snakes vs heaviest snakes)
- Common Snake myths (not slimy being a big one)
- Add in SOME environmental stuff
- thermoregulation (being coldblooded)
- how often they eat
- Diurnal vs Nocturnal

I talk about my personal collection a little, and give a little high scale info mixed in to the benefit of the adults ALWAYS present. . . . Should be fun, my fiancé is doing her first one with me this Thursday evening :-)

I really like all this but would include that they are Terrestrial, Arboreal, and Aquatic as well. Not sure there are too many other species of animals that can lay that claim. Frogs maybe.
