Humid Hide Examples

Hey all, I've had great success getting my BP to shed using a humid hide (due to a suggestion I received here). Recently, I increased the size of the entrance to her humid hide to accommodate for her increased size. She has been avoiding it ever since I increased the hole, so I fear that she does not feel safe in there anymore because of how large the hole is. Therefore, I'm considering making a new humid hide for her. Do you have any tips/suggestions for me?

Also, can you post some descriptions/pictures of your hides? I'm interested to see what you have for a humid hide and how it works for you.

The Tupperware container is a humid hide. I have damp sphagnum moss inside,
and a hole in the lid. He goes in there when he wants to. It has given him perfect sheds,
even when the humidity in his cage is only 40%.

Thank you for posting your humid hide! Lionel looks very happy with it.

Was there a reason you put the hole in the lid instead of the side? I placed my hole in the side, which I am starting to think was not an issue because it was high enough where my BP would be below the hole when she was resting in there. When I expanded it, though, I increased its width and increased its height by cutting off more to the bottom of the hole. Do you think that's why she doesn't like it anymore?

I also noticed that you have a clear container. I originally did not use a clear container so as to allow her to hide from the outside world whilst "soaking". Is that not really an issue for BP's?

On an unrelated note, what kind of substrate do you use? I am using aspen shavings, but your substrate looks like sand?

Also, how frequently do you have to dampen your moss?

I put the hole in the lid, because then I could put more damp moss in the container without it falling out of a side hole.
I just happened to use those Gladware containers in my kitchen, so I took one to use for a humid hide.There are also 4 black plastic hides in his cage.
I have to re-dampen the moss every 3-4 days because I use ceramic heat emitters to keep the ambient temps, and they tend to dry out the enclosure.

My substrate is Aspen. It is just a finer shred.

When you make a humid hide out of a gladware container like that, do you have a problem with plastic fragments on the edges of the hole you cut? I've tried to make one, but when I cut the plastic I worry that it might harm my snake if he rubs against it the wrong way. Also, how big do you cut the hole?

I recently changed to the black hides they sell at reptile basics, but when I used to DIY hides, is file down the edges then take a lighter to them until they were completely smooth and rounded off.

Hole size would be about 1/4" larger than thickest part of snakes body.

I cut the hole with a pair of scissors, then I took a piece of sandpaper and smoothed the edges of the hole.

Are you guys keeping the humid hides in at all times or just when they are going into shed?

I keep my humid hide in all the time. Humidity stays at about 80%.

And is it in addition to the hot and cool hides, or does it replace one of them?
